It was one of the few games Demarcus went without a sack and broke his 10 game streak. I sat down with the game tape tonight and went over what Tampa Bay did to help negate the pass rush of Demarcus and in general.
First, let me say after watching it I have no idea what the coaches saw in Brad Johnson to keep him around. He honestly looked as bad as Quincy Carter under Dave Campo.
Here's what I saw with commentary sprinkled in. It should be noted at the outset that Newman was out as was Anthony Spencer. Brian Stewart was still making the defensive calls and playing soft coverage all dang day long.
After the third play of the second half Anthony Henry goes out with a quad injury so our two rookies are on the field full time. Alan Ball comes in as the third CB. Pat Watkins, Ken Hamlin, Alan Ball, Scandrick, Jenkins was your defensive backfield. Fun times.
---------------------
First TBay possession:
My notes so far. Our pass coverage has been so soft to this point it should be used in a Charmin commercial. 8-9 yards off the receiver by Anthony Henry pretty often. It's led to some quick throws and easy completions against him. Furthermore, it looks like Tampa Bays entire offensive plan has consisted of short, quick passes. Very quick set-ups and Jeff's release has been fairly fast as well. Despite that, he's still been sacked once, should have been twice, and had a pass batted back in their face.
A good indication of what Tampa Bay's offense has looked like? Halftime stat, Antonio Bryant, 5 catches for 33 yards. 6.6 per catch??? Garcia is averaging 6.6 per attempt.
When it comes to Leftwich, he's toast. The protecton has been good so far, but Leftwich would in all likelihood been sacked the time Garcia got it away at the end of the second possession. On another occassion, when the pocket collapses, Leftwich could not have gotten that ball away as quickly as Garcia did.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Second half, fumbled kick off by Tampa Bay, Dallas recovers. Personal foul, can ya guess who it might be on? Think special team's penalties, think, think, P-, Pa-, Pat Watkins anyone?
First possession:
Pretty much every 2 out of 3 plays Garcia was throwing at the soft coverage. Jenkins or Scandrick would play up and press the single receiver on one side and Garcia would be given a chunk of yardage on the other side to throw to. Tampa Bay did try by my count 5 runs to the left. 3 of those runs the back switched field since there was nothing there, one went for four yards, and the other was stopped for maybe a half yard loss.
This was a very vanilla defense we played due to injuries, suspensions since Pacman was on time out from Kommandant Goodell, and lack of talent in Henry. I didn't see a lot of blitzes coming from behind Demarcus but those that were called caused some havoc. Brady got his sack on a slight delay blitz on the inside and Hamlin's was off of Demarcus's side as well I believe.
Ellis was getting some pressure, but not a whole lot. This whole game we played a lot of zone it looked like. We gave Garcia underneath stuff and his YPA in the first half showed it.
This brings us to then this upcoming game. As is noted here and by some Bucs fans, Leftwich has a wind up that can be timed with a sundial. Some of the passes Garcia got away I don't believe Byron can even if everything else was exactly the same.
Which is why this game is going to be sweet. We don't have the supposed "depth" at CB we had last season, but I'll take our current 4 all day long. Brian is gone and Wade's secondary last year was ranked what, #2 with T-New back there? Gimme that with Gerald back there at safety and I'm smiling all day long.
This game can only end badly for Tampa Bay.

First TBay possession:
- Demarcus lines up over LT like usual. THey have a heavy set to his side with a TE. Three step drop and the ball was out.
- Double teamed by the TE or RB. The pass went to the right side.
- Lined up over RT. The run with Earnest Graham went his way, but he couldn't shed fast enough. The block wasn't good enough though to get much yardage.
- Drops back in coverage, switches off the slot receiver to A. Henry and picks up Antonio Bryant as the ball is thrown. Sure tackle for a 5 yard gain. 3rd and 1.
- One on one blocking, run was to the right side which was stuffed by our underrated nose tackle for a loss.
- Lined up over RT, dropped in coverage, pass to the left.
- rushed the passer, chip block by the running back. Play deep downfield to Galloway who was covered step-by-step by Anthony Henry. That should tell you where both are in their careers.
- 3 step drop, ball out for a 7 yard completion. Henry 9 yards off the LOS in coverage.
- Not a play: Demarcus lined up as an ILB, walking back and forth behind the DE's. Time out, Tampa Bay
- shotgun formation, Demarcus as a DE, one one thousand, two, ball out before I could count two one thousand. Incomplete deep, if Jeff holds to "two one" its a sack by Ken Hamlin who laid him out anyways. This bodes poorly for Leftwich. Very poorly.
- run, off right tackle
- run, center.
- perfect jump with the snap. I mean PERFECT. Late flag. offsides. Moose comments on how it looked like a perfect jump on the snap.
- lined up off right tackle. Doubled with the RB, pass to TE on right side
- run up the gut for 2 yards
- lined up left, dropped into middle coverage. Pass to right slot for 15 or so.
- some kind of run. Ware on the stop. No idea what happened because Fox's coverage was showing replay
- Doubled again with RB, pass to the right, illegal forward pass.
- chipped by RB, illegal motion, offense. field goal after declined penalty
- toss right, RB falls down,
- one on one, not much of a push there. J-Rat bats the pass back to the endzone.
- TE chips before going out on a pattern. Middle of hte LOS was completely empty of anybody. three offensive lineman to contain D-Ware and Canty. Soft, soft coverage.
- Feigns the rush, then drops slightly into coverage. incomplete
- runs a stunt to the inside, beautiful except it's a two step drop??? Anthony Henry 9 yards off the LOS so the pass is uncontested to the WR on the LOS.
- run left, but the RB shifts when there isn't a hole and goes into the 3 gap.
- oh oh, oh, man, Jenkins got him a HIT on the WR. that was nice. Demarcus lined up left like usual and then dropped into coverage over the middle. Pass was to the wide right. Gotta watch that again. Man he LIT UP Earnest Graham. That's nice...
- Demarcus rushes, then sheds the block, heads downfield and makes the tackle on Garcia, Canty has twice now taken an outside route and left the middle of the LOS WIDE OPEN for Garcia to convert on 3rd down.
- run right
- run right, holding.
- shotgun, good pocket, quick pass.
- Ware was across the LOS before the ball is snapped. 3rd and 3 coming.
- no idea where Demarcus was because Fox was showing us the rear ends of the offensive linemen. He dropped into coverage and Garcia takes the sack, J-Rat.

First possession:
- run at Demarcus for the second time all day. Loss on the play
- one on one, Anthony Henry NOT EVEN IN THE PICTURE on coverage against a freaking running back. 9 yards off the LOS. three step drop, easy completion Enjoy this all year long Detroit fans.
- 3rd and inches, first down.
- doubled by the TE and LT, pass left. Moose, "Big cushion on the outside. You have to wonder Goose if that's automatic or they are calling that in the huddle." Remind me why I shouild miss Anthony and Brian?
- Presnap Demarcus and Ellis switch sides. Demarcus gets the TE in coverage, Ellis looks slow coming around the edge. Brady James on the sack on the delay blitz. This was one of the few inside blitzes I saw all game.
- Screen pass. Scandrick on the stop on 3rd and 11. Gotta say our CB's are looking good against their running backs on tackles. I think Garcia says "Duck!" a few times as he walks to the sideline with the camera right on him. Must've been thinking about getting supplemental coverage from AFLAC or something.
- Singled on the left tackle, run right, off tackle.
- Ellis and Demarcus switch pre-snap. Ellis dang near got there but ended up off balance and laying on the turf. the pass was to the left, deep. Initially a 3 step drop. Garcia also ended up on his butt courtesy of Zach Thomas. Alan Ball in coverage
- shotgun. Ellis almost got there. Demarcus singled, but the block of the left guard ended up as a double against Demarcus. Jenkins missed the tackle for the first down. Henry has a quad injury. Alan Ball on the field this series.
- two step drop. pass to the right. Jenkins also lined up 9 yards deep. Seriously, it's 9 freaking yards.
- run right, uncalled holding on the left tackle against Demarcus
- one on one match up. Demarcus tried a spin move after initially stopped. horrible coverage, 35 yard gain on a 7 yard pass. things are still coming out quick for the passing game.
- run right, stopped about 4 yards deep but tackles missed and Demarcus comes in to finish it off.
- quick pass, 3 step drop. GOOD coverage by Jenkins. Demarcus was cut blocked.
- one on one against Demarcus. Short pass in the left flat, Burnett and Ball on the tackle, Demarcus helps.
- Demarcus one on one, Pope takes him around behind the Garcia. Some pressure, almost intercepted by James
- Demarcus drops into coverage, ALMOST intercepted by Demarcus. Galloway slaps it out of the air to prevent the int.
- Shotgun. Demarcus comes on a stunt into the center of the line that is picked up by the center with help from the right guard. long pass, incomplete on 3rd and ten. Long time to throw.
- This is the first 3 and out for the defense all game. That's a lot of plays to be on the field conserding the number of our offense's 3 and outs. OUR PUNTER IS HIT. Knocked down completely as he had his plant leg cut out from under him. Flag? Nah, it's Dallas's punter.
- Demarcus lines up right tackle. Run into the 2 gap. BTW, Dallas went 3 and out previous again.
- Demarcus chipped by the RB, then Hatcher deflects the pass
- Demarcus comes off the edge. Hamlin on the safety blitz and the pass was rushed. 1/10th of a second and Hamlin has the sack. Leftwich? Oh yeah, sack baby.
- Yellowbook commercial with the woman with the tattoo removal issue. Yum diddly yum.
- run right off tackle. Even still, they make sure every time to get Demarcus blocked
- chipped by TE, then picked up by the RB. TE goes out in the flat for a pass.
- goal line set, run right. stopped on the 3rd and one. Tank Johnson on the stop.
- run up the gut on 4th and inches.
- blocked with help from the RB. Pass to the right, 12 yards.
- 5 step drop on the slant. Demarcus started inbetween the ILB's then came around back to his usual spot.
- THERE YA GO. Demarcus drives Pope back into Garcia, pulls down Jeff and only a quick flick pass saves the sack. Demarcus lined up wider than usual and comes on a speed rush. Pope had no answer.
- Singled up, quick pass to the right.
- singled again. pass high to the right. the last two passes were quick.
- Demarcus singled, pushed LT into Garcia but the pass gets off and completed. Scandrick cut out Bryant's legs to save the first down. Goose, "Dallas defensive line rushing 4 guys is not giving Garcia a lot of time to look downfield. That's why we're seeing these short passes"
- Demarcus singled, quick pass that hit Stonehands Stevens and is dropped. Canty knocks down Garcia
- 4th down. TE slides out and RB chips Demarcus. on 4th and 4, only one CB was lined up within 6 yards of the LOS. Lovely.
- Press coverage, Demarcus chipped by the RB. pass to the TE in the flat. 3 yard completion. 27 seconds remaining.
- Demarcus doubled by RB and LT. Ellis collapses the right side and should have a sack but Garcia pushes it about 10 feet downfield as he's falling for an incompletion.
- Demarcus first hit by Ike Hilliard then engaged by the LT. completion to Ike in the left flat
- Demarcus gets one on one. Pushes the LT into Garcia, pass incomplete.
