Irving, Texas - Tony Romo could have been a Bronco.

As a free agent, he had a choice between Dallas and Denver when he went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois in 2003. The Broncos offered Romo a $20,000 signing bonus. The Cowboys offered $10,000.

"It was never about the money," Romo, the Cowboys' Pro Bowl quarterback, said Wednesday. "But I almost signed with the Broncos. ... I think I made the right choice."

Romo, who said he was a Denver and Green Bay fan growing up in Wisconsin, chose a fellow former Eastern Illinois quarterback over another.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton was Dallas' offensive coordinator when Romo signed with the Cowboys. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan also played for Eastern Illinois.

"To show you my recruiting ability, Sean beat me, and I offered twice the amount of money. So that really disappointed me at that time," Shanahan said. "I asked Tony not too long ago, I said, 'Tell me, how could you go to Dallas?' And at least he said the right thing. He said, 'Coach, I thought I had a much better chance of making the team there than I did at your place.' So he's a politician as well."

Shanahan salutes Dallas

Is this a preview of Super Bowl XLII?

After seeing the Cowboys on Wednesday in the first of the teams' four joint practices before Saturday night's preseason game, Shanahan said they have a legitimate chance to represent the NFC in February.

Shanahan isn't saying much about his own team's chances of reaching the title game, but he likes what he sees in Dallas.

"I think the Cowboys are one of the few teams that have the opportunity in the NFC to go to the Super Bowl," Shanahan said. "I look at probably five of them. Obviously, I won't call off all of their names right now, but the Dallas Cowboys have a very strong football team offensively and defensively, and it's great to work against them."

When told of Shanahan's words, new Cowboys coach Wade Phillips was right on cue in the compliment game.

"I think the Broncos can make the Super Bowl, too," said Phillips, a former Broncos coach.

Warren still waiting

Defensive tackle Gerard Warren is waiting to be traded.

Through his friend, Darnell Davis, Warren said he has come to terms with the Broncos' decision to trade him. All he is waiting for is the call to make it official. Indianapolis and Washington are among the teams Denver is still talking to about Warren.

"Gerard is happy, he's just waiting to hear what's next," Davis said. "He wants the Denver fans to know he enjoyed his time here. He has no hard feelings."

Warren is still being paid a training camp per diem by the Broncos, but he didn't travel with the team to San Francisco for Monday's game or to Dallas on Tuesday. The Broncos maintain that Warren could remain with the team and they may be leaning toward that option rather than cutting him. If that's the case, Warren would be back Monday.

Hamilton stays home

Broncos left guard Ben Hamilton did not make the trip to Texas because he is recovering from a concussion he suffered early in training camp.

But Hamilton's agent, Peter Schaffer, said the lineman has been given a battery of tests and passed. Schaffer said the Broncos are following the NFL's new guideline on concussions.

"The team is just being cautious," Schaffer said.

Rookie offensive tackle Ryan Harris has a back issue and isn't working this week. Veteran offensive tackle Matt Lepsis was back at work after missing a week because of a groin injury.

Mustard moves

The team moved backup tight end Chad Mustard to offensive tackle. He was wearing his old No. 85 in the morning but working with the linemen. In the afternoon, he was wearing No. 71.

Gordon still a starter

Amon Gordon remained in the Broncos' starting lineup at defensive tackle, replacing Warren. Gordon was a surprise starter Monday alongside Sam Adams against the 49ers. The former practice squad player worked mostly with the second and third units during training camp.

Gordon is holding off veteran Jimmy Kennedy for the job.

At strongside linebacker, Nate Webster was working with the first-team defense.

Marshall update

In his third day of practice after missing the first 12 days of training camp, Brandon Marshall took his spot as the No. 2 receiver in the morning practice. Marshall also worked on punt returns.

Veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley did not practice. Domenik Hixon and Brian Clark were working with the second team while veterans Quincy Morgan and David Terrell were working with the third team.

Footnotes

The temperature at Cowboys headquarters reached 103 degrees. ... Broncos owner Pat Bowlen will tour the site of the Cowboys' new stadium with Dallas owner Jerry Jones this week. ... Defensive tackle Alvin McKinley stayed in Denver because his wife is about to give birth.
