DeSean Jackson... what do you think?

How about if the Cowboys draft DeSean Jackson out of Cal not just to be a WR but a punt/kick off returner? I know he is a bit under-sized (6' - 170lbs) but he could develope into a Hester for the Cowboys. I don't think the Cowboys need a TO-size receiver right now.

The question for me is when should they draft him? Some mock drafts have him picked in the 'teens.

What do you guys think?

I like him but at 178 I think he will need to bulk up some to be able to handle the physical CB of the NFL.

Don't want him. Not big enough. He'll be pushed around at the line of scrimmage and tossed aside as a downfield blocker.

I say he drops into the second round.

I love Deshaun Jackson. He will be gone by the time we draft. He is super fast!!

So let's say he does drop into the 2nd round, would you draft him then?

I personally doubt he will drop too far into the 2nd if he doesn't get picked in the first. Hester has proven to many coaches around the league that the returner's position is very important. Hester kept the bears in many games and many of times times, won it for them.

We don't need him; we already have Stanback. At his weight Jackson is a project at WR and can potentially be a kick returner if he bulks up. Stanback already has a year up on him. Unless he drops in the 4rth round he would be a wasted pick for us in the first three rounds (and he won't drop to the 4th round either).

Exactly, but what is he going to bulk up to? 190? 200? At 200, that's 20 lbs more than he's got now, would he still be as fast?

Anyone know the weights of Santana Moss, Steve Smith, Wes Welker, Greg Jennings. Those are some pretty good WR's who don't look all that big.

Sure he would still be fast. I'm not talking fat. Most kids coming from college will have to add some bulk to their frames. At 6'0" he could easily get into the 200 range and still maintain his quickness and speed.

Santana Moss is listed at 5'10" 200 pounds, Steve Smith 5'09" 185 and Welker is 5'09" 185

If he could get to around 190-195 lbs or so that should be "big enough".

I'm curious as to what he weighs in at the Combine. He probably won't run there, but at his Pro Day we'll see if he can maintain his weight and run fast.

But over the next two years as he get on a professional weight training program I'm sure he could add on a solid 10-15 lbs . . . .

If he drops to our second and we haven't drafted a receiver, yes, I'd take him then.

And though Hester has elevated attention to the return man, Hester is a special breed of player. I doubt Jackson comes close to Hester. Everyone thought Ginn would be a similar player to Hester, based on Ginn's college career, but he didn't come close to Hester.

If I'm spending a first round pick on a WR, I want an agressive, big, strong and fast type not some smurf. I understand he could get bigger. But I would prefer to draft a WR who is ready to go. Now get me in the second round and tht would change some. But not in the first.

True but I think Ginn will end up being a better WR than Hester. Ginn started off slow for the Dolphins but started producing later in the season and put up better numbers at WR than Hester has as WR.

Hawkins will be better and a round later.

Lavell Hawkins/ California: He turned in a breakout season, which made scouts take notice. He runs razor sharp routes and has terrific hands. Hawkins is being likened to former USC Trojan Steve Smith, now putting up good numbers for the New York Giants.

He would be hard to pass up if he drops to pick #28.
Exactly, if the Cowboys get a CB with #22 and think they can draft a back up for MBIII in the second round, why not take Jackson with #28?

I think he would be a lot easier to evaluate had he remained in school for his senior year giving us another year to see how Ted Ginn JR. handles the 2008 season.

To me, they are very similar to one another in size and ability.

I personally am not (and never was) high on this kid. I don't think he'll necessarily be a bust, but if he fails to get bigger and improve in the other little things (I think he's gotten by on the fact that he's faster than anyone else on the college field up to this point) he'll be an inconsistent player in the nfl at best.
