(NFL Draft Bible) William Clay Ford has signed off on the Detroit Lions drafting QB Matthew Stafford of Georgia with the number one overall pick, the NFL Draft Bible has learned. With the contract looking to be worth around a total of $80 million with about $40 million guaranteed, the Lions front office wanted to make sure they got the blessing of the owner on all accounts and they have. Look for the Lions to draft QB Matthew Stafford with the # 1 overall pick this Saturday.

$80 mil with $40 mil guaranteed for someone who has never played a down of football in the NFL. WOW.

This is the same website that said Clay Matthews, Brian Cushing and Vontae Davis all tested positive for steroids/marijuana at the combine. (which none of them did)

I dont trust them what so ever..

This is why we need a rookie tiered level cap.

Stafford's the right choice, but what an insane contract that ties up your cap space - no wonder nobody wants the #1 overall.

I only give it some validity as Steve Wyche on NFLN is hinting that Stafford is working on a contract and it could get done as short as tonight.

Why does everybody freak out when the #1 pick gets a ton of money? Its not like any of us are paying for it.

This has to change in the next players contacts.... it will ruin the game.

You can't give 40 garanteed millions to a newbie that never played a game and than don't have money to keep the veterans....

Oh there is no doubt in my mind Stafford will be #1, but I just don't trust the contract numbers just yet.

I don't even think Stafford is the best QB in the draft. If they draft a QB without having a offensive line he is going to get killed and may not recover.

lol, why anyone would want the #1 overall pick is beyond me. 40 Mil without a snap paid is ridiculous.

First off they are still negotiating with Stafford. No deal as of yet.

Lions do have a deal in place for Curry that has been agreed to if they can't get a deal done with Stafford.

Again NFLDraftBible has not gotten their facts straight. But the Lions could still get a deal done. Supposedly they have a Friday at 4:00 PM deadline for Stafford to agree or they go with Curry.

Stupid move. They need to solidify Oline and defense first, then look at quarterback.

He's set up for failure unless he pulls a Carson Palmer and sits his first year. Mark my words though, if he starts from day one he will be a "bust" to no fault of his own.

Source: Lions have a deal with Curry if Stafford doesn't sign soon

Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports according to a league source, the Detroit Lions have completed contract terms with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and the team is now waiting to see if it can reach an agreement with their No. 1 target, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. The source said the Lions will not allow a decision to go beyond Friday and if a deal isn't done with Stafford by then, the team will sign Curry and take him with the first overall draft pick.

ESPN says they are negotiating with Stafford and want to get a deal done, but if not they are fine with Smith or Curry too. It will be 1 of those 3 guys.

No big surprise IMO.

It's not just the first pick that is insane. Until it's there is a rookie pay scale or rookie salary cap I don't want the Cowboys to sniff a top 10 pick.

Stafford will be the pick because even if he can't get as much as he wants, he knows he'll receive even less if the Lions bypass him as he could fall out of the top ten.
