Dez almost costs the Cowboys the game?

Saw this on ESPN:

On the Hitchens (non) pass interference call Dez ran out onto the field to protest the call. He was not wearing a helmet. Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(j) prohibits "removal of a helmet by a player in the field of play or the end zone during a celebration or demonstration or during a confrontation with a game official or any other player."

I did notice Dez run out there and for a split second I <did> worry about exactly that.

Anybody else worry about that at that moment?

Speculation is there should have been an unsportsmanlike penality called for him running on the field like that.

No, I've never seen the refs make that call... ticky tack if it's even a foul.
A Cowboys fan has never seen the refs make that call? Must be young. That's the Emmitt Smith rule. I've seen it called several times.

(However, Dez didn't actually remove his helmet. He was standing on the sidelines with his helmet off. So it could have been a penalty, but not that one).

An offensive player running out onto the field to challenge the ref when the Lion's offense was on the field?

Let's put it this way - if they would have called Dez for the penalty it wouldn't have been a huge surprise.

The rule is for a player on the field of play removing his helmet...Dez did not take off his helmet.

Presumably, it would have been the same penalty that they called on Switzer after the no-call on Deion's PI against Irvin in the 2004 NFCCG.

He doesn't play defense and running on the field to argue a call should have been a 15 yard unsportsmanlike.

That should have been a penalty on Dez. He was lucky. I hope coaches will say as much during film sessions. He can't do that.

Refs are trained to look the other way on infractions like that. Only if Dez got up in the refs face would they call a foul, especially in that spot.

I would suggest to Dez that he never do that again. Same goes for all the Cowboys. I think Parcells had a rule that he was the only person on the field who could argue with the refs. Cowboys better be on their best behavior this week in GB. The spotlight will be on them.

No, Emmitt was one of the players on the field during the play who took his helmet off, not somebody on the sidelines without a helmet walking out after the play...
