Moore: Callahan known to get QB's best; can he do it with Romo?

Cowboys bank on Callahan-Romo partnership

The Cowboys hint at what is to come. Questions about how different this offense will look on opening night are met with knowing smirks or a Jerry Jones vow that “we’ve got some secrets up our sleeves.’’

Unless Edward Snowden releases the information from his undisclosed location in Russia, the world will have to wait for those answers until the Cowboys and New York Giants kick off a little after 7:30 Sunday night.

As we have heard time and time again, the result will be a collaborative effort between head coach Jason Garrett, coordinator Bill Callahan, quarterback Tony Romo and others. While Garrett presides over the alterations and Romo has been given a greater voice, Callahan is the one who must pull it all together and make it work.

For the first time in seven seasons, Garrett will not call the offensive plays. The headset has been passed to Callahan. The support for his ability to handle this role isn’t restricted to the organization.

Rich Gannon was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2002. The quarterback had the most productive seasons of his long career while playing under Callahan and Jon Gruden in Oakland.

They'll probably just speed up the tempo of the offense.

Something a lot of us were pleading for last season.

“I’ll let the fans decide,’’ Callahan said. “I think the most important thing for us is to score points and win.

“I really don’t think anybody cares how you do it and what you’re doing as long as you score.’’
Yes it's really that simple. All we have to do is execute.

Too many cooks spoil the broth.

That was my first thought upon reading this.

But then I heard Fisher Friday evening on 105 and he tossed out one of his cryptic segments I think was titled "Things Not To Tell The Giants."

He did not go into detail, but merely listed what might be considered topics which are things the Giants don't know about Dallas at this time.

One of the "topics" was two minute offense.

My first reaction when he said that, and then the host had him repeat the list and that was again prominent, was Dallas is going to run the hurry-up and dictate defensive personnel and mismatches.

Just as a side note, and this has nothing to do with any of this other than I heard Fisher last week make a remark.

He said, "You should see Dez come out onto the field before practice or a pre-season game and throw left handed passes over half the field.

Again, my first reaction is to suggest there will be an end around option for a TD from Dez to Austin this season.

And just to make it juicy, it will win an important game.

So what could be new?

Faster paced offense. I could see that.

How about some pistol formation. I think that is something not going away, and I think it could be good for us because it allows Romo to line up behind the line of scrimmage but still have all of the run options. Peyton lined up in the pistol a fair amount the other night.

I think if people play base defense against our 12 offense, we try to spread them out and throw the ball.

I heard that segment but the hosts seemed so preoccupied that I don't think they even heard what he said even after the second time. He said 2 minute offense which I know Romo is good at but it could be a defense killer if we don't execute it. Either way I am more than happy to see something different. Just seems like we are finally getting the OL to the point where we can actually run the ball. I hope that we don't abandoned the run just to run the hurry up offense.

Yep. I think we do that along with a couple other new wrinkles and stomp New York tomorrow.

I was driving to work and so I couldn't copy the list. I wanted to put it here and thought it would be a great topic of discussion figuring out what each topic meant.

But then I got to work, and those selfish bastiges wanted me to actually do something work related and so I forgot.

Any OC who can figure out how to get the rushing attack going so a QB can use playaction will get the best out of Tony Romo. I think we will see a lot of wide open receivers this season.

I love the fact Callahan is calling the plays... Garrett can now focus on the overall performance of the team better.

Hopefully out run game can do A LOT better and stay healthy so romo doesn't have to throw more times a game than their are stars in the sky.
