and he went out with a whimper rather than a great season

I dunno about this. Aikman was battered his last few seasons, but he was still performing at a high level when healthy. Look at how 1998 and 1999 started out. Then, all of his top receivers go down.... Irvin, McKnight, Rocket, and Galloway. I can only imagine how Randy Moss woulda clicked with him. But the offensive line left Troy out to dry.

Troy didn't go out with a whimper.... he went out with a thud.

The kind of coverage ESPN is giving Brett Farve Retirement is Ridiculous. ESPN Has become The Brett Farve Retirment Channel 24/7.

Did Troy Aikman get this kind of coverage from ESPN when he retired in the summer of 2001?

I'll ask the same about Steve Young, John Elway, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly and etc?

I still think that Jim Kelly is one of the most underrated QBs of all time. He even gets looked over in favor of Dan Fouts (another undeserved underrated QB). Kelly was the K-Gun that lead the Bills to 4 consecutive AFC championships.

Yes, he may not have the accolades of Aikman and Aikman didn't get the same due when he retired, but they are two totally different types of players. Aikman was a professional and played the game as such compared to Favre who opened his heart to all and played the game as a kid would. Neither is wrong in how they played, but obviously, since more seemed to be a part of Favre's experience as a player, he would be revered more when he left the game.

I also agree that because of the way Aikman went out because of an injury, it also took away from him retiring like Favre did. Either way, we as Cowboy fans understand the greatness of Aikman and obviously have missed his type of talent at the qb position for a long time until Romo came aboard.
