Did anyone know this about Meredith?

I was looking through old years at DraftHistory.com and saw that the Bears drafted Don Meredith in the 3rd round in 1960.

My understanding was that we had signed Meredith to a "personal services" contract prior to the draft.

Anyway, I wasn't sure if this was a bit of trivia that somehow had escaped my notice until now or if they might have screwed up.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thumper I ‘ll have to admit ……I did not remember that little important tid bit about Dandy Don myself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Meredith

Meredith played his college football at Southern Methodist University, where he started at quarterback for 3 years, leading the Southwest Conference in passing completion percentage each year and getting selected as an All-American in 1958 and 1959.

The Chicago Bears chose Meredith in the third round of the 1960 NFL Draft, and traded him to a young Cowboys franchise for future draft picks. Meredith spent five years as a backup to Eddie LeBaron before he was given the starting job by head coach Tom Landry in 1965. That same year, Meredith led the Cowboys to the NFL playoffs, something he would continue to do until his unexpected retirement in 1969. This all wrong

"Dandy Don", while never leading the Cowboys to a Super Bowl, has always been exceptionally popular with Cowboys fans who remember him for his grit and toughness, his outgoing nature, and his leadership during the first winning seasons for the Cowboys.

During his career, he had a 50.7% completion rate, throwing for 17,199 yards and 135 touchdowns with a lifetime quarterback rating of 74.8. He was named the NFL Player of the Year in 1966 and was named to the Pro Bowl twice.

Yep, we carved the doors out of redwood trees with an ax and made the locks out of grizzly teeth which we had killed with a bowie knife.

That's back when men were men and women were curvy.

I don't know how much credence I would put in that article since they got a lot of things wrong.

For instance:

Meredith started almost all of the 1963 season with LeBaron only playing in spots. Eddie retired after that year and Meredith was the fulltime starter beginning in 1964.

We didn't go to the playoffs in 1965 but in 1966.

Meredith retired after the 1968 playoff debacle against the Browns so he wasn't around in 1969. That game was played on Dec 21 in Cleveland and Meredith retired shortly afterwards. It might have been after the 1st of the year but I don't think so, if I recall it was within a few days.

I'm still not convinced that we traded for Meredith. I know we had to trade future draft picks to the Commanders for the rights to Eddie LeBaron (who wasn't even playing at the time) but I do not believe we did for Meredith.

You are exactly right....The 1966 playoff game we lost to the Packers on our home field but what a great game it was. We spotted them 14 off of turnovers. We made a great comeback only to lose and of couse the following year was the "Ice Bowl.
