Did we underestimate Romo's injury?

I know I did.

I figured he'd be able to come back without a problem and be the Romo we all know, boy was I wrong. When we seen him during the preseason, he looked good and he also took some hits and got right back up. But in yesterday's game it was obvious it's effected his game play tremendously, and hopefully it's just rust that'll he knock off.

His passes were very inaccurate, he forced balls when other WRs were wide open, he made terrible reads, he also had happy feet a lot (couldn't set feet) and reacted to pressure that wasn't even there, he looked very uncomfortable and rattled in the pocket, he also held the ball way too long at times and took unnecessary sacks/hits, and to go along with all of that he audibled out of a run on 3rd and 1 and cost his team 4 points.

On hindsight it's not all surprising that Romo had such a poor opener, I mean the guy practiced 3 days in a row for the first time last week since his surgery, previous to that his back hasn't been able to hold up completely and they've been very cautious. Looking back at it now and seeing how much preparation it takes for a QB to be NFL ready, it was pretty asinine to think that Romo would come out and be himself. I think there's a great possibility we won't see the Romo we know until the 2nd half of the season(maybe not at all).

Hopefully this is only just rust we're seeing that will easily be shaken off, because if not we may be in for a long season fellas.

Probably too early to answer your question. But your statement is on the mark.

No. I think the team probably felt like they have a lot invested and had to ride the pony they bet on.

It's no secret that I never liked the contract extension. I never liked paying so much to Tony, especially with his injury history these past few years but it's done now. No sense in crying over spilled milk. It is what it is but I do think you have a point in that Tony looks as if he is much worse off physically then many believed.

lol, come on now let's not be silly. If you've got a crystal ball then you're really wasting it's potential on watching football games.

No. I've been saying since the day of the surgery that no two back injuries are alike and he may never be the same player. Counting on Tony Romo returning 100% (from the Cowboys' perspective) would be totally irresponsible.

Since I have not watched the game, I will have to assume that Romo's performance was based on a lack of continuity/repetitions/confidence during the pre-season and not a damaged back.

Alot of this is really common sense. If you had two back surgeries - are you stepping up in pocket or are you getting happy feet? I know Romo will bear alot of criticism between now and end of year (and I do think this is his last year). But lets all try to be reasonable and remember a third back surgery probably means some type of disability the rest of his life.

I don´t think so, IMO the problem was not his health / back, it was his mind, he just wasn´t right, I still believe he will come back, if he doesn´t, then we´ll be looking at a top 5 pick for sure.
If he does, we might get to 7 or 8 wins, the question is, what would be better for this franchise right now? I think most of us would agree on this one.

No way to sugar coat this one. He had no strength on deep balls, no zip on medium throws and no touch on short throws. But Coy you're right, he was't right and he wasn't seeing the field and I though Goose was spot on when he said that regular season speed is not practice speed and it's not preseason speed. He looked like he hadn't played and his play exemplified that.

I think he'll come around I not so sure it's next week or even this month though.

I can live with the physical rust, .. but the poor decision making is disturbing.

I agree with @Zimmy Lives on that his poor performance "was based on a lack of continuity/repetitions/confidence". It definitely is disturbing that he had so much trouble yesterday, but I think it'll all come back over time with repetition, hopefully ...

Yes we did! I mean a lot of his issues yesterday were mental..which points to rust and lack of rhythm.

I think he will too providing his back is truly healthy and he stays that way throughout the season.

I think fans were mislead about his injury/surgery. Maybe expected too much too soon.

But you know they are all crowing he's going to be just fine! He'll be fine for the next five years!

He's definitely struggling.

The mental mistakes I saw were from pressing, .. trying too hard to make something happen without knowing where all of the defenders were.

He threw into triple coverage and about got Dez killed, (not to mention he missed the deep guy for a TD) and he threw into a more densely populated area in the EZ, also after missing the open receiver in the EZ.

That is not rust, .. he should know better than that in both examples.

I'm afraid it could be both. Pretty obvious the Tony was not mentally prepared for that game but if you watch the entire game, not just the INTs, he struggled with the deep routes all game long. He under threw almost every ball. No zip on his passes and that's really bad because Tony has never really had a big arm. He doesn't look like he's physically right to me. Last year, at the end, he had issues throwing the deep ball as well.

He missed Dez deep all last year
