Chargers | Dielman contract update
Sun, 4 Mar 2007 05:42:09 -0800

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers re-signed OG Kris Dielman to a six-year deal worth $39 million, including $17 million guaranteed over the first two years.

Bills | Walker contract update
Sat, 3 Mar 2007 10:04:43 -0800

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills signed free agent OT Langston Walker (Raiders) to a five-year deal worth roughly $25 million.
Browns sign Steinbach to seven-year, $49.5M deal

A year ago, no one thought a guard would ever get $7 million a year but Steve Hutchinson got a seven-year, $49 million deal from the Minnesota Vikings.

Bengals guard Eric Steinbach topped Hutchinson by getting a seven-year, $49.5 million deal from the Cleveland Browns that included $17 million in guarantees. Over the first three years of the contract, he will receive $23 million.

Bills reach deal with Commanders OG Dockery

The Buffalo Bills, who kicked off the unrestricted free agency signing period leaguewide with a minimum salary deal for a veteran guard early Friday morning, struck at the same position but in a much higher tax bracket later in the day in addressing their offensive line.

Buffalo on Friday night reached an agreement with four-year veteran Derrick Dockery, who had played his entire career with the Washington Commanders, on a seven-year, $49 million contract, ESPN.com learned.

The total contract equals the deal that "transition" free agent Steve Hutchinson signed with the Minnesota Vikings last year, a league record for a guard. The contract includes $18.5 million in guarantees and will pay Dockery $23 million in the first three seasons.

What's important to note in all of these transactions are the first three years and the amount of money guaranteed.

All those guys mentioned play the Guard position. Davis can play either Guard or Tackle depending on injuries and needs on the OL so that makes him a more versatile player than those other guys.

Me too. I would hope that his contract is backloaded and he will be 5 mil or less for the next 3-4 seasons. That would make the contract OK by me.

thanks, wg. i've had to back off and let the maniacs run wild for awhile. we don't know the overall contract details and despite this being jerry's "strength" people still wanna whine that we got screwed.

people over-react and in many cases, far too soon. keep the numbers coming wg!

I almosted vomited when I realized that Davis got around what Hutchinson got last year. Almost paranormal what has occurred this FA season so far.

All the more reason we should have signed Hutchinson last year. We would all be looking back on that and thanking JJ for being a shrewd GM.

Difference is, all these guys are good at what they do and Davis isn't. The fact that hes verstaile doesn't mean hes good at either. He sucked at guard and sucked tackle. Serious Kool-Aid drinking going on in Dallas today.

Just FYI, most of the fans here don't even live in Dallas. Thought I'd clarify that.

But as I've said several times, unfortunately, it's the cost of doing business. But since this is seemingly one big FA contract for an outside player, I'm willing to accept it.

Seems most of the FAs, Dallas is focusing on are their own free agents.

DAVIS GETS BIG MONEY

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports that the Cowboys have given offensive lineman Leonard Davis a seven-year, $49.6 million contract, with $18.75 million in guaranteed money and $24 million paid out over the first three years of the contract.

The contract bests by $100,000 the deal signed on Friday by Eric "the Skipper" Steinbach in Cleveland.

The payout in guaranteed money falls far short of the $23 million that we heard Davis wanted But it's a great contract for a guy who has gotten no all-expenses-paid working vacations to Hawaii in six NFL seasons.

And Davis brings to four the total of lineman who got huge money in the past three days based apparently on potential.

None of them -- Davis, Steinbach, Kris Dielman, or Derrick Dockery -- have ever been to the Pro Bowl.

I assume they meant $18.75 million. Again, though, these numbers are right in line with the market.

I would hope so - otherwise that is a HUGE salary in the first three years.

Yeah I'm thinking that as well. No biggie, we knew that's prolly what he would get.

Let's do some math.

If his signing bonus of 18.75 million is correct, that is a 2.68 million cap hit per year.

If he is guaranteed 23 million over the first 3 years, 18.75 being in signing bonus, that means he has only 4.25 in salary the first three years, right? So that averages to a 1.42 million dollar cap hit each years.

So for the first three years, his cap his is only 4.09 million per year or so.

Adam or someone who is more cap savvy will have to verify that, but I think less than 5 million per year is reasonable for a starter on the line.

The math looks sound to me. Those base salaries in the latter years are going to be crazy (and probably will never see the light of day).

I agree, but tthe more I look at it, the more I like the contract. If he plays really well at guard, his contract will start to be earned as it escalates. I mean, consider what OL contracts will be in 4 years!

On the other hand, if he is only adequate and after 4 years isn't worth a 7 million dollar cap hit, then we can cut him and take the cap hit.

Agreed. Up until about Friday, Flozell's final year of his contract seemed steep to me. Now even Gurode's deal looks cheap.

there now are no 'minor' positions on the field in the NFL. Football is a team sport, and I guess that salaries have finally come in line with that base premise....

Woody's Girl, I just recently acquired a laptop, and gained the ability to 'talk' on this board. After years of being deaf, but not dumb on the board, through WebTV, I'd like to take the opportunity to state that I have thoroughly enjoyed your contributions to this site, over the past years! I can finally say that....

It is kind of odd, given the recent discord along the Dallas offensive line... that money is NOT a factor in the play of the unit. Flozell was given a good market contract to which he is in his 'money' year this year. Gurode, Kosier, Rivera, and now-Davis, have ALL been given very strong and lucrative contracts to produce....I wonder if this offensive line, will now be strongly and self motivated to contribute, since their 'base needs' have been strongly provided by Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. Motivation should not be a problem with the veterans or the backups trying to make it to the field.
