Different Look At FA

I know we have seen the TO, Julian Peterson and Atwaan Randle El threads but how about a different look at FA. One that is more cost efficent, fills needs and sets us up to chose the BAP in the 2006 NFL Draft?

I see 5 FA signings as the key to this off season. WR,LB,S, OT and NT for depth.

I would purpose to Jerry and Bill:

WR Kelly Washington from Cincinnati-Great size and speed but has not lived up to his potential. Only 26 years old and still could develope. This move is contingent on Glenn and Johnson coming back next year. Washington is not suited to be the primary guy but on a team looking for speed he would fit in great as the 3rd or 4th option. In a year that lacks quality WR's in FA and the Draft Washington would be a great addition while looking forward to revamping the WR group in 07'.

LB Akin Ayodele from Jacksonville-A prototypical 3-4 LB wth great size and range. Can line up at DE or drop back in coverage. Has been known to lay some serious wood and could instantly upgrade a young LB group. Only 26 years old and still has room to improve. Could be a 5 year starter for Dallas.

S Chris Hope from Pittsburgh-A real smart player. Almost a second head coach on the field. Spends more time in the film room then any player in FA. Plays with good speed and will come up and lay the wood. Not a big play maker but is always around the ball and rarely gets beat. Only 25 years old and still learning the game. Would be a great compliment to Roy Williams.

NT Damione Lewis from St. Louis-Only 27 years old and a real good pass rusher for a NT. Always disruptive but sometimes lacks the drive to be consistent. Would be a great addition to rotate with Ferguson.

OT Mike Pearson OT Jacksonville-Only 26 years old. Excells in Pass Potection but needs to work on his run blocking. A real smart player that recognizes and adjusts to stunts and blitz packages. Really just needs to find a nasty streak and he could be dominant.

These 5 signings not only would be cost effective and allow Jerry to go for a Reggie Wayne, Julian Peterson or another big name FA but also would allow Dallas to let the draft come to them.

Kelly Washington has got to be a RFA right? I can't see us giving up a pick for him- he drops a lot of balls.

Ayodele could be a prime target for us but don't underestimate how much interest they'll be in this guy. This would be a nice addition.

Chris Hope should be the top FA FS because of his age and production. I think Pitt will work hard to keep him. Again price could be a factor here. Great tackler but not really a ball hawk. I'd take him though for sure at a reasonable price.

Damione Lewis is not the run stopper I think we're looking for at NT. I think we will draft a NT, but if not I wouldn't mind Grady Jackson from GB. He's not a young guy but the man is tough to move.

Mike Pearson would help Bledsoe but if we're looking for competition at RT he's not the road grader you'd like there. But the possibilities at OT in FA are all flawed in some way. Not sure how BP will go at that spot.

Of your suggestions I think Hope and Ayodele would be the best fits and could be impact signings. I agree with your general premise that signing FA's on the way up is generally desirable.

Good call on Washington, I missed that one. He is indeed a restricted FA. In that case maybe a Jabar Gaffney from Houston would fit the bill? I kind of even like the idea of adding Eddie Drummond from Detroit. He would upgarde the Kick off and punt return teams on the spot as well as provide a reliable 3rd or 4th option that is always a threat to break one at WR.

Akin Adoyele is a Texas native. He played high school ball in Dallas, TX. I think the Cowboys can easily sign this guy if he becomes a free agent.

If you're gonna go the RFA WR route, I think Brandon Lloyd (SF) is a far more promising choice.

I almost listed him but he is a restricted FA as well.

Listen, I'm a BIG Kelley Washington fan, in fact he went to high school about 10 minutes from where I'm sitting right now... a coworker went to school with him... but the Cowboys have never signed a restricted free agent, to the best of my recollection, and Kelley is an RFA this year...

Won't happen...

Don't have any problems with your other suggestions, though...

I could see Hope taking McCrees (SS) spot in Carolina. He is from just a few minutes south of the stadium. He is good enough to play either S position and although Minter (FS) is relatively cheap next season will be his 10th.

I'm sorry too, I didn't mean to pile on... I don't read the whole thread before posting, I take the posts as I come to them, and respond when I feel the urge...

This runs contrary to my mission in life, which is to stamp out and eliminate redundancy... :D

What would we be willing to give up to acquire Brandon Lloyd from SF?

They won't give him a 1st round tender. Where was he drafted? 3rd round?

A 3rd for Lloyd is a stretch.

Lloyd is a phenomenal reciever. He doesn't get too much love cuz of that team, but he's good. If SF's smart, they'll pony up the cash for him. I doubt anyone gets their hands on him, SF's got plenty of room under the cap.

I think Lloyd will be stellar soon under Norv Turner's vertical offense.

I think he'll blow the league up if he ever gets a competent QB. He's got the best hands in the league, IMO. I think he's a better reciever than Chad Johnson. I'd like to see him get some talent behind center to get the ball to him more.

He is not better than Chad Johnson, IMO.

Dont get me wrong I like Lloyd, but his route running isnt crisp and although he has some great hands he has some problems getting separation because of his route running.

I just see CJ drop too many balls. If you get it near Lloyd, chances are, he's pulling it in.

ESPN scouting report on Lloyd

Lloyd is a slender receiver who has good initial quickness and the ability to accelerate. He comes off the line with a nice change of pace and he can separate from a defensive back coming out of a break. He is tall and has long arms and is very competitive when going up for a ball. He has difficulty in physical situations and does not have the strength to be a threat in any type of blocking role. He is a pure receiver and gets knocked around by physical defensive backs. His top speed may be a question as he doesn't get the separation you would like to see on deep routes. Because of lack of experience, he has concentration lapse and occasionally will drop the easy catch. He needs to improve his strength and get a more competitive attitude in terms of taking his physical play to the next level.

I like Lloyd. He might be a bit soft but he had a great day against our physical corner Henry this year. But unless we go with TO, which I doubt, we will draft a receiver to develop. The guys we have are fine if we have an OL to give the QB time to throw. We do need to get younger at the position but I'm ok with the guys we have as starters for another year.
