Just some random thoughts, knee jerk reactions, and uninformed opinions rattling around in my head after today's loss with bonus musings about the team at the halfway pole. My reasons are selfish, it's either this or therapy and I can't afford therapy so here goes:

Offense
  • At some point Players just have to know better
    • Tyrone Smith has to know that we absolutely can't have a penalty on that play. If he does it's game over.
  • Early pressure took Romo out of this game
    • Thought Romo threw a lot of passes off his back foot that he could have stepped into
    • Either has to do a better job of shaking that off or play-calling should be adjusted to get him in a rhythm.
      • Whether that's some short drops and timing patterns, screens and draws to slow the defense down or max protect, I don't know. What I do know is that when Romo gets into the zone as a passer he's as good as there is in this league
      • I don't think he every really recovered
  • Can't remember that last time I saw receivers get their hands on so many balls and not make a catch
  • Joseph Randle needs to either get quicker or stronger
    • I think he has the vision but he needs to either get through the holes before they close back up or break a few tackles
  • I would have liked to see them use Dunbar in the short passing game more
    • When the Lions started selling out to stop the run early in the game I thought that would be the perfect time to try to get Dunbar into space
    • Same with the 4 minute offense at the end. Thought a screen or swing pass to Dunbar might be a much better call on second down than an obvious run up the middle for a 2 yard loss
      • Yes you risk stopping the clock but then but it's a high percentage completion and you still have the option to wind down the clock with a draw on third down if you fail
      • With Detroit Selling out on the run possible upside is Game,Set,Match
  • Was disappointed with the Dez sideline antics
    • Not saying they had any affect on the outcome of the game but it just feels like a big setback on the whole Dez is maturing thing.
    • His critics will have a field day with this and I'm not convinced he will respond positively
  • I'm getting frustrated with the inconsistency on offense
    • Feel like with our our improved offensive line and quarterback we should be begging teams to blitz us. Instead it feels like our kryptonite.
    • With Callahan calling the plays I feel like I'm seeing less creativity and more predictability
    • How is it we're passing the ball 66% of the time this year and the runs still feel forced
    • Have we run it on 3rd and short this year outside of the Red Zone?
    • What ever happened to the sprint draw?
    • What happened to the Drag route we saw Dez starting to run so effectively last year
      • or Myles Austin for that matter I remember him eating up KC defenders on that play when he broke out
      • A big strength of of Dez and Myles is RAC we don't have to just run sideline routes with them. Let them work in the middle once in a while and use traffic to get open and then their unusual combination of strength and speed to make the big play.
    • If the safties are going to cheat to Dez's side why don't I see TEs making them pay
      • Every time I see a replay I see Witten sitting at 5 to 10 yards of depth
      • If Witten doesn't have the feet to split the cheating safties what about Hanna?
    • What happened to "Getting the RB's in space"?
    • What happened to this up Tempo offense with new nomenclature that I read about in the preseason
  • I really like what Terrance Williams potentially brings to this offense but he has to catch the ball better
  • At some point you have to let your play-makers make plays.
    • Romo doesn't even look at Dez when defense lines up with a Safety shading him
    • Not advocating trying to force feed Dez but at some point you have to give him a chance to do what he does
Defense
  • Lack of consistent pressure is killing this defense
    • This is not an indictment of Marinelli. He is doing an amazing job with what he has to work with.
    • Would have liked to see the Cowboys blitz more this game. I know you risk giving up the big play but if you give Stafford and CJ 4 or 5 seconds they're going to torch you anyway.
  • Think it was the Giants game where they were triple teaming Dez with a CB, S, and cheating a LB into his passing lanes. I thought we should have employed a similiar tactic and maybe we did and I didn't see it on the TV coverage. But I feel like we should have made Bush or the rest of the no Name receiving corp beat us.
  • Sean Lee is the equivalent of Peyton Manning on Defense. Not the best athlete on the field but he doesn't have to be because he wins the play before the ball is snapped. I think he's the NFL DPOY right now.
  • I know what Hali and Houston are doing in KC or Williams and Alonso in Buffalo I'd take Lee and Hatcher over any other defensive tandem in the NFL so far this year. Imagine how good our defensive front 7 would be if the rest of the group were just average.
  • I'm surprised but I feel like there's nothing else to say on this topic. Maybe I'm giving them a pass because of the injuries or maybe my expectations for this unit are just that low right now but I came here to vent after a loss in which they allowed more than 600 yards but I find myself wanting to talk about the good as much as the bad
    • Or maybe is has something to do with the Jekyll and Hyde performance they turned in today after all they did have 4 turnovers too.
Dallas Cowboys Mid season awards(Nominees) - winner
  • DPOY(Sean Lee, Jason Hatcher) - Sean Lee
  • DROY(Wilcox) - Wilcox
  • The Manster Award(Spencer, Ratliff, Ware, Hatcher) - Hatcher has been nothing short of superb. With Ware out OLs have nothing to fear but Hatcher and he still shows up. He's on pace for 14 sacks while being surrounded by nothing more than street free agents
  • Defensive Over Achiever of the Year award(Church, Scandrick, Selvie) - George Selvie
  • Defensive Under Achiever of the Year award(Spencer, Ratliff, Ware, Carter, Claiborne) - Tie -Bruce Carter and Morris Claiborne
  • Defensive Clint Eastwood Award(Good, Bad, Ugly)(Carter, Carr) - Brandon Carr. He's been on all ends of the spectrum this year. When hes good he's real good and when he loses his confidence he's bad ugly.
  • Defensive Guy who deserves an Award but didn't get one(Church, Scandrick) - Barry Church.
  • OPOY(Sean Lee) - Tony Romo - Isn't that what you do with these offensive rewards. When no ones else distinguishes themselves you default to the QB
  • OROY - (Williams, Frederick) - Frederick has been a rock in the middle
  • Offensive Over Achiever of the Year award(Free, Beasley) - Beasley - Nobody does more with less
  • Offensive Under Achiever of the Year(Austin, Murray) - Austin
  • Offensive Clint Eastwood Award(Bryant, Romo, Leary) - Bryant - His good is great but his bad is ugly
  • Offensive Guy who deserves an Award but didn't get one(Waters) - WatersBenedict Arnold award(Ratliff) - Jay Ratliff
  • Comeback Player of the Year(Waters, Church, Free) - Barry Church
  • Coach of the Year(Dooley, Marinelli) - Marinelli

Interesting fact. Martin Mayhew believes in drafting D Linemen in the first round.

My assesment:

Garrett is the worst HC in the league.

The offense is a total train wreck and the defense is historically bad.

We will never win a SB with this core group including Romo Witten and Ware.

We are 31 million over the cap in 2014 and will have to leverage future years just to get even by restructuring the contracts of that same core group of players that we will never win with.

Thats this teams situation in a nutshell. Please tell me im wrong.

I'm too upset to read all of your post, but I totally agree with this part. I remember in 2006, when we were trying to kill the game against the undefeated Colts, instead of running it up the gut for a loss, we rolled Romo out and threw the ball on a safe pass to a TE. But this crew just isn't going to call that kind of play.
