Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Greg Hardy is pictured working out during the Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp held at Valley Ranch on Friday, May 8, 2015. (Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News)

Former Cowboys quarterback Babe Laufenberg answered questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Any idea on when Greg Hardy decision will be made?

Babe Laufenberg: It has been about 40 days, and no idea why it is taken so long. But my take on what will happen. NFL will not reduce the suspension…looked soft on Ray Rice decision (which they were) and we know how that backlash got ‘em. However, by the letter of the law of the CBA at that time, the domestic violence punishment was two games. They suspended him 10 games by putting it under the heading of “conduct detrimental to the game” (not to mention the “conduct detrimental” to the health of the woman involved). I believe if the case goes to court, the league will fight as hard as they can, even if they believe it is unwinnable. They cannot appear weak on domestic violence issues, so even if it costs a ton of money, they will go all in. And a ton of money is a relative term when you are talking NFL deep pockets.

Question: Who is the unknown guy we should look forward to seeing in camp?

Babe Laufenberg: I think there are two. one is George Farmer, the receiver out of USC. The other, is quarterback Dustin Vaughn. Farmer was a kid with a lot of talent who went undrafted, and it is hard to hide a guy who comes out of USC. The other guy, would be Vaughn. Sometimes it is hard to say exactly why you like a QB. There are so many intangible that go into playing. Why there are so many misses, and why the Super Bowl last year featured a 6th and 3rd round pick at QB. But he has a little something to him. But he still has a long, long way to go. But he has a chance. I hope they let him compete for the backup job, but we will see.

Question: With McClain suspended for 4 games, Do they keep Lee at the Will and start Brinkley/Hitchens at MLB or is there potential we see Lee slide back into that role?

Babe Laufenberg: I think the temptation would be to move Lee into the middle….I would be tempted…but the best thing and the way I believe they will go is to just leave him on the weakside. Save a little wear and tear of taking on big bodies on the inside, and just give a little continuity to the defense. I hope he can stay healthy…doesn’t everyone…and I sure am looking forward to watching him play again.

I was initially of the opinion that there's no conspiracy against Hardy, but I admit, I'm starting to suspect the NFL is purposely dragging its feet and waiting as close to the start of the season as possible.

And you have to understand that I'm being as objective as I can be because I'm one who believes Hardy did play a role in the domestic abuse case (No, I don't want to argue it all over again). But you can't just make up justice as you go, and if you're going to suspend him, then be up front and settle his case in a timely manner.

These matters need to be decided sooner rather than latter so the players and their teams can make the necessary adjustments and plan their next actions accordingly.

If they drag this too close to the start of the season, Hardy could end up playing while his appeal goes to the court, which could be a 3 to 6 month ordeal.

I believe the same thing happened to Williams in Minn a few years back.

The players association needs to put in limits that the NFL has to stick to when determining punishment, hearing appeals etc. Arbitrarily taking extended amounts of time to meet their own agenda while riding over the rights of the players and teams is unacceptable, whether the players are guilty or innocent.

Also, this crap of banning players, but allowing them to be paid, then banning them again when they have made their decision is asinine too.

yea, but how screwed would we be if the judgment was 2 games, but the case was finished week 16 or 17 right before a potential playoff run.

A friend of mine, who is a fellow Cowboys fan, suggested something recently. He said the league may be handing out these controversial discipline decisions to lay down a mental foundation towards negotiating the next collective bargaining agreement. He suggested the owners would offer the players an opportunity to re-writie league disciplinary policies, along with adjusting the commissioner's authority to punish players, in exchange for more adding games/weeks to the regular season. If a large enough segment of the NFLPA is reacting to league disciplinary measures like some fans, I can see how that kind of bargaining ploy would work to the owners' benefit.

As much as sport really revolves around sportsmanship and a sense of fairness...I don't appreciate the picture of deep financial pockets determining right and wrong as to how they are viewed. That type of justification, around cash flow issues, was why the South had so much problem and still do. You have to side upon concept of ethics/morales, or continue fighting the same issues down the road.

This is one arena where 'financial right' be damned....protect our players. All of them!

The NFL has responded to the twitter lynch mob by setting up a kangaroo court that administers severe punishment based on one-sided investigations. The U.S. has a higher percentage of its population incarcerated than any other country that keeps records that can be trusted, so our criminal justice system is quite capable of finding people who are guilty of crimes and administering punishment. The NFL should leave it to them.

You know, it could be that the NFL is dragging this out in order to make an announcement when the season starts in an attempt to lesson the blow back. They have to know that they are going to lose. I really don't see any way they can win here. However, if they wait till the season starts, there is a chance that the attention span of America might be all of two minutes on this and then they turn attention towards the actual games. That could happen. I don't know. I guess we'll see.

I like your thinking the NFL is going to lose, and Goodell is trying to lessen the fall out. Goodell spends more time covering his butt than getting business done.

Could very well be
I think it's obvious they violated the CBA with his suspension
The question is as babe suggested they put up a good fight to look good on the
Publics eye
Or do they admit they were wrong and do the right thing
If this goes to court I suspect he will be allowed to play pending a settlement which could take months
To me the right thing is come out and admit they blew it
But people don't always do the right thing
I may be in the minority but to me the whole rice deal was just crazy
Peoples outrage should have been at the prosecuted who let him off with a slap on the wrist, not the nfl who's original punishment was a tremendous fine. A much more serious punishment than what he got through the legal system
The league has to uphold their image, I get that but they also have to follow the agreements they made in the CBA
Punishment for breaking the law is primarily the responsibility of law enforcement and the courts, not employers

You got to believe this will be a major point of contention in the next CBA negotiations. The NFLPA would be wise to have a very thorough and detailed process and criteria for league action on punishment. The handling of all of these cases collectively (Rice, AP, Hardy, Brady), or should I say mishandling of all of these cases makes this along with healthcare/long-term health major areas of focus.

I stopped reading when he said he had no idea why it's taking so long. it does not take going on 7 weeks to uphold the 10 games. i agree that he is getting 10 games. and everyone with a brain should know the reason why.

A decision has already been made.
They are waiting to announce it, they have a plan, no telling what that is.

I think everybody needs to settle down. I mean, it's understandable why it's taking so long. Whatever decision gets made has to be approved by Mara. Obviously, he's kinda busy right now, dealing the the JPP thing and he's probably got his focus on that. Settle down people.......
