DMN Blog: Anonymous scout rips Romo

ESPN.com did a season preview for each team and granted a scout anonymity in exchange for a no-holds-barred take. In the case of the Cowboys, the scout roughed the passer.

Tony Romo is the weakness. I'm not sure he’s the answer. He played well when he replaced Drew Bledsoe because teams didn't know how to defend against him and because he was making simple throws. But during the last four to five weeks of the season, he couldn’t make the plays his team needed him to make. He looked like Rex Grossman, throwing off his back foot. They do have some weapons for him, and they've got a good defense, so his mistakes won't be magnified until the playoffs.

It could be true. But he has looked pretty damn sharp so far this pre season. Heard the exact opposite about him too.

TOTAL AGREEMENT on that assessment!

Been telling my buddies this, they think Im crazy, but I'm tellin ya that side arm throw 15 yards down will not open up the field.

didn't see a whole lot of deep route action in a long time. We are screwed.

bring on the slams, but that scout is right on. my glasses were off

I have a problem with the "Anonymous" part. If you feel that way, why not put your name on it.

Wow, that's truly insightful. I've only heard it 1000 times from every casual fan that has even the slightest interest in the NFL.

For all anyone knows, Deep Throat could very well be Joe Theisman. I hate no balls, 'anonymous' commentary.

it could be true.
it could be a writer throwing gas on a romo-fire to gain a name for himself.

but if he does do well, great. we got our qb.

if not, we can let that pan out and put qb on our list of needs. but let's see what romo does before we break down every fart brohm makes.

I think if anyone has any doubts about the throws, just watch some of the deep balls he delivers. He's a good QB.

I would wager money if he was cut, by tomorrow every team who's QB isn't Peyton, Tom, or Carson would probably be interested in bringing him in.

He did look shaky, although the entire team tanked the last few games. This season will be the acid test. Thank God we have 2 #1s and this looks to be a draft class where we can grab one of the 2 or 3 guys that look like high QBs. I know there are some that rue the day we passed on Quinn, but if Romo fails, we can always grab Brian Brohm or Andre Woodson. I don't like Henne and Brennan but they are options as well.

He had bad games, but the intermediate routes were still excellent. He actually attacked down field much more than Bledsoe did. Also, those easy short passes were the ones Bledsoe had the hardest time completing. I don't think the guy did much research, especially the throwing off his back foot part.

His mistakes will be magnified in the playoffs? I think he did OK in the playoffs again Seattle. Also, that whole Rex Grossman comment was unnecessary. :p:

Why does no one ever consider the notion that Romo's play may have been affected by the fact that the 'Boys had one of the absolute worst defenses in the league -if not the worst - for the last 5 games in the season?

This seems like a scouting report that has been repeated ad naseum since the end of the last season.

The real irony is that this scout(if he is a scout) apparently overlooked last year's collapse of our defense, which has all of our 1st round draft choices this millennium.
Bears spent a 1st round choice on Rex, and Romo was draft choice free.
And Romo never was as pathetic as Rex against Green Bay, and our offensive line wasn't as good as Chicago's, at least as a 2006 season comparison. Rex would have been ground into sausage behind our line.

One of the reasons romo played Bad at the end of last season is because our defense took a huge crap on us and romo had toplay from Behind. Yea romo didnt light up the place either but Lets' be honest our D was the real issue.

Romo is fine..

the point I took was "throwing off the wrong foot", everythig else was mute to me.

and he was right.

And I saw that the whole preseason too. He can study all he wants, but the mechanics,,,

Guys I like him, but the "deep throat informant" has a very valid point. flush him out, make him run, throw off the wrong foot like Brett (his idol).

this obscure informant can't be Skip Gayless?

LOL @ "his weaknesses might not be magnified until the playoffs". Talk about a major cop out. He may as well have said Tony Romo will lead the Cowboys through the playoffs until a superior team beats them". What a joke.
