Who's next? (hey, a Cowboys' post ;))

No, we're not talking about that deal ESPN created a couple of years ago. We're talking who's next as in who's the next player the Cowboys sign to a contract extension.

A lot of e-mailers say Chris Canty. I like it. I can see the Cowboys doing something with him during camp. He signed the RFA tender worth a little more than $2 mil last month. Jay Ratliff got $8 million to sign last year. I think Canty is in that neighborhood. He's also a good locker room guy. And he had his best year under Wade Phillips' defense.

Then there's DeMarcus Ware. There's really no need to rush this one, but with so much cap space there's no reason to wait either. He is signed through 2009 and if there isn't a new CBA between the NFLPA and owners, then he would be a restricted free agent in 2010. But he's not going anywhere. Indy gave Dwight Freeney $33 million guaranteed. Ware could (should?) top that.

How about Tank Johnson? He had a great off-season and could be an impact guy this year. His deal is up after the season. I think I'd wait until later in the season (November/December) and attempt to work something out after there is some more physical evidence that he can be a difference maker.

Right tackle Marc Colombo is in the last year of his deal. He was one of the Cowboys best finds in recent years, up there with the Terry Glenn trade. He is a fighter. I like that. This one is a tough call because the Cowboys have drafted Pat McQuistan, Doug Free and James Marten, who is playing some guard now, too, the last couple of years.

I'd go with in order,

1. Canty - He signed his restricted tender offer and didn't complain and didn't whine and didn't hold out. He is young and is improving. I think he'll be a good one by the time his career is over.

2. Ware - I agree there's no rush, but the longer JJ waits, the more expensive it's going to get, IMO.

3. Tank - I'd wait until November to see how he performs in Wade's 34 defense now with a full off-season behind him. My gut feel is that Tank will be re-signed. I think he'll do well this season.

4. Colombo - Again, I don't know if we're even going to re-sign him given that we've got McQ, Free, and Martin behind him. I think Colombo is going to be expensive to re-sign assuming he's healthy this year.

And if Houck is impressed enough with McQ/Free at RT, I can see JJ letting Colombo leave.

On another note, assuming we do re-sign Canty, Ware, and Tank this season and even if Colombo is not re-signed . . . .

The rest of our offensive starters are signed up for at least a couple years.

In addition, on Defense, our entire starting secondary is signed up for several years, plus our starters at LB (though this is probably Z Thomas' final year), and our starters on the DL for at least 2 years.

That really gives us a strong foundation to keep drafting the best player available rather than for need.

If Canty would agree to the deal that Ratliff got - 5 years -$20.5 million, I'd do that tomorrow.

Wide receiver Roy Williams, right after he's traded from the Lions!

I'd think that should be the benchmark for Canty.

In addition, Ratliff is more versatile than Canty in that Ratliff can play both NT and DE in the 3-4. I wouldn't think that Canty should get a (much) better deal than Ratliff - unless of course JJ waits the the market moves up a lot.

Unfortunately the market went up for the position Canty plays, so what he and his agent want is higher then Ratliff. While Ratliff can play multiple positions & Canty only at DE, Canty has been a starter almost his whole but short career with the Cowboys. While Jerry could sign Canty to a new contract prior to TC, I'm inclined to think he might want to see a little more from him before doing so. Jerry/Stephen could easily wait almost to mid season before signing Canty & maybe even Tank Johnson. If Free (Adams backup) and McQuistan (Colombo's backup) look good in TC/preseason games, I doubt Jerry will put out the money that goes with a starting RT to resign Colombo (although I like his nasty attitude, etc). While Colombo's been a stalwartat RT since we signed him, some analysts consider him (others say same thing about Kosier) as our weak links on the OL. Besides Colombo leads the team in pre-snap penalties & we've got to stop those.

I'd get 1 and 3 done this year, Ware in the offseason, and let Colombo walk

although I'm thinking that he would like to hang on here

Letting Colombo walk comes with the assumption that one of those young guys are ready. I hope that they are, but I don't think I would assume Colombo is gone quite yet....not like we are hearing glowing reviews about any of those youngsters.

I like that answer. A lot!

At this point, I would overpay to get it done.

Make the Lions "an offer they can't refuse."
