Archer's OTA observations

Timmy Mac gave you some of his from the morning workout. Now I'll come up with some more - I hope.
** Leadership has been a topic for some time around here. You want some? Listen to Bradie James. With the backup defense springing some leaks in the running game, James walked over from the sideline and shouted, "Hey, let's go now. They don't run the ball on us." It was a small gesture but one that should be noted.
** More leadership? After Tony Romo and Roy Williams missed connection on a route in "on air" drills, assistant head coach Jason Garrett wanted them to go again. One problem - the duo had already lined up before Garrett spoke, and Romo said, "Yep, we got it." They then connected on the timing route flawlessly.
** Jon Kitna certainly has a strong enough arm. He led Patrick Crayton perfectly on a double move for a would-be touchdown on cornerback Michael Hawkins. Kitna also rifled in a slant pass to Travis Wilson between the linebacker and corner.
** Line play is difficult to assess in these OTAs but I noticed defensive end Marcus Dixon make two would-be stops behind the line of scrimmage. I talked to Dixon at the rookie mini-camp and he said he has added bulk to his frame and is in much better shape than he was a year ago. He might be worth keeping an eye on when the pads come on this summer.
** I didn't see wide receiver Isaiah Stanback make any great plays but I did notice his speed early in kickoff coverage. He was easily 5 yards ahead of the other coverage guys. He also stayed late to field punts. He understands this is a big year for him.
** The best Romo-to-Williams connection came on a rollout to Romo's right when he hit Williams on a comeback with Terence Newman in coverage. The timing was right on.
** Not sure if the players had the right cleats for the artificial surface at Standridge Stadium. Too many times receivers or defensive backs were slipping coming out of their breaks.
** Strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek put the team through a quick sprint test after the workout. I don't remember seeing that after last year's OTAs.
** I spent most of the time watching the offense and noticed O-line coach Hudson Houck being much more vocal than he was a year ago. He jumped the group pretty good after a play. The offense had a quick tempo, which is what Garrett wants.
** Assistant director of pro scouting Judd Garrett, who suffered a broken hip when the team's indoor facilty collapsed, and college scouting coordinator Chris Hall, who suffered a serious shoulder injury, attended Tuesday's workout.
**Rookie quarterbacks Stephen McGee and Rudy Carpenter took two snaps apiece in team drills.
** DE Jason Hatcher did not practice because he is recovering from off-season knee surgery. Hatcher and Kyle Kosier are expected back for the June 15-17 mini-camp.
