B from Bradie
Asked to grade the defense's performance through seven games, ILB Bradie James didn't dodge the question or mince words.
"I would say we’re at a 'B,' because we’ve given up some points, we’ve given up some passing yards, we’ve made some mistakes," he said. "But we’ve also won some games and we’ve kept our team in some games. So there’s still some things we have to get better at on the defensive side of the ball. But hey, we’ve got a few more games to improve that and get better."
Part of the process has been getting acclimated to a very different type of 3-4 scheme under Wade Phillips. James says, even now, that's still happening.
But one checkmark he gave this staff over that of Bill Parcells is the open lines of communication that have led to a sharing of ideas in-game.
"One thing about this regime is we make adjustments at halftime. And they listen to what we say on the field," James said. "Sometimes, what I do being a linebacker has to be on point with the defensive coordinator and I see some things out there and offer up an idea to (defensive coordinator Brian Stewart), and Stew makes that adjustment on the field.
"Maybe if they’re blocking a certain way, then I can come loose or Akin (Ayodele) can come loose or Greg (Ellis) can come loose. That’s the whole thing, you try to give your defense a chance to make plays, and that’s what those guys do."
