Bill on the 'Boys

Here's Bill Belichick's take on the Cowboys (he kinda likes them):

They’re an impressive football team, they really do everything well. They’re very physical on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Statistically, just about any stat you want, they’ve got. They can run the ball, they throw it, they make big plays, they turn the ball over, they sack the quarterback, they’ve got the most interceptions in the league. You can just go right down the line. They’ve got a lot of great players.

Defensively, they’re outstanding up front, they’re physical, the linebackers run well, they have playmakers in the secondary, led by Newman – who they got back last week – and Williams.

Offensively, the offensive line is as big and powerful and explosive as any I’ve seen in a long time, with Adams and Davis and Gurode. They’re very powerful. The tight ends, Witten’s a great player, probably the best all-around tight end that I’ve seen in a long. Romo’s a very athletic quarterback. The play against St. Louis, where they snapped the ball over his head and he’s running around 35 yards behind the line of scrimmage and scrambled and got the first down kind of epitomizes his playmaking ability. Both backs are outstanding, Barber’s having a terrific year, he’s real hard to tackle. Both of them are good in the passing game. And of course, they’ve got a lot of big play receivers. You can’t underestimate guys like Crayton and Hurd, just because they’ve got T.O.

They’re good in the kicking game, I think you saw that Monday night with a couple big kicks at the end. They cover well, Davis and Watkins and those guys are hard to handle. And they return the ball well. So they’re a complete team, they’re solid all-around, they’re well-coached. Wade has a very sound fundamental football team. They don’t give you much. You gotta earn it and they haven’t given up much. It’ll be a challenge ahead of us this week.

Do the Patriots have a chance to win?

I don't think so after listening to Bill Belichick.

"I think that they are impressive in every phase of the game," Belichick said of the Cowboys.

"Offensively they have a great offensive line, the tight ends are good, the running backs are good, the receivers are good, the quarterback's athletic. They've been able to throw the ball down the field, they've had a lot of catch-and-run plays, good on third down, good running the ball. They've been able to run out the clock on a couple of teams that hang on to it during the fourth quarter, get the ball away, run when they had to run it, they've been good inside, close to the goal line, been able to get the ball in.

"So, think they're an outstanding offensive football team, they're just as good on the defensive side of the ball. They haven't given up anything the last couple of weeks. They can rush the passer, they can stop the run, turn the ball over, a lot of interceptions, play sound defense. They're well-coached, they're tough, strong on the line of scrimmage, they pursue well. They've got a lot of great players and they're very well coached.

"They've got a good football team. They pretty much do everything well. That's why they're 5-0."

This is basically Bellichick's PC every week.

He is a robot. You could just play the feed on a continuous loop, he never says anything. Just coaching cliche's about how great his opponent is, lol. Which is good, and I think all coaches do that. bellichick just does it without offering anything that could be considered interesting to anybody.

Last night I listened to that interview Nors recapped the other day, and while I knew Belichick was bland, I had no idea he was a soulless, humorless cyborg to that extent. They were asking him about watching the Buffalo game on TV (interview was Monday during the day) and he just said that TV presentations were entertaining for fans but were of little analytical value. The hosts knew that, and were just trying to joke with him, but he'd have none of it. Or maybe he couldn't tell they were kidding around with him.

I have to give him credit for establishing this atmosphere of needing to improve even while blowing everyone out, and I know this serious talk about the upcoming opponent might be part of that, but come on. There has to be a little personality deep in there somewhere.

Or maybe not.

People who think Wade is boring should listen to this guy.

Cowboys are the best team in the ... ever

Patriots coach Bill Belichick just concluded his conference call with the Fort Worth-Dallas area reporters. And after listening to him talk for about 10 minutes, it's obvious the Dallas Cowboys should not only go undefeated this season, but every season.

"They've been impressive in every phase of the game," the coach said. "Great offensive line. Tight ends are good. Running backs are good. Receivers are good. Quarterback is athletic. They've been able to throw the ball down the field. They have a lot of catch and run plays. Good on third downs. Good running the ball. They've been able to run out the clock on a couple teams.
They keep the ball away. Running when they had to run it. Good inside close to the goal line been able to get the ball in. Think they're an outstanding offensive football team."

Then without missing a beat he continued,

"They're just as good on the defensive side of the ball. Haven't given up anything the last couple of weeks. They can rush the passer. They can stop the run. Turn the ball over. Got a lot of interceptions. Play sound defense. They are well coached. Tough, strong on the line of scrimmage. They pursue well. They have a lot of great players. They are well coached. They've got a good football team. They do eveyrthing well. That's why they are 5-0."
This is typical of Belichick; he's known to avoid saying much of anything except to heap Lou Holtz-type praise on every opponent he's prepares for.

In a way this almost provides bulletin board material for our guys. Obviously the coach is talking out both sides of his mouth. He's too quick to compliment every area of our team so in essence, he doesn't mean any of it.

He probably can't watch TV. His cyborg brain interferes with TV and satellite signals.

I had to listen to him for a few years when he was in Cleveland. He really is like that.

What is amazing is that he rattles off the names of the special teams coverage guys...Davis & Watkins. That right there shows you how much film this guy watches himself.

I remeber watching the old Tom Landry show talk about a guy who after he was finished you would swear we were going to lose the game. No matter who we played Tom would talk about them like they were the greatest team we would face. Belichick may be boring but he gets results.

...but there is something useful from all of this.

The first path to success over an opponent is to have enough respect for them to bring your "A-game".

This whole week we heard the talk about the Bills being a classic "trap" game. One doesn't have to worry about that if you truly believe that your opponent is worthy.

I have a feeling that hoodie is going to have his team ready for this one. They may come into this game as Goliath, but he has every intention of leaving that game as Goliath. He's going to try his darndest to rip that slingshot out of the Cowboy's hands.

The Official Belichick Transcript
October 10, 2007 3:17 PM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick pays tribute to the Cowboys in the following transcript. Much like his mentor Bill Parcells, Belichick is reluctant to end sentences, but just stay with him and there's a nice Vince Wilfork payoff at the end.

I have paraphrased the questions since it was hard to hear some of them.

What do you think about the 5-0 Cowboys?

I think that they are impressive in every phase of the game, offensively they have a great offensive line, the tight ends are good, the running backs are good, the receivers are good, the quarterback's athletic, they've been able to throw the ball down the field, they've had a lot of catch-and-run plays, good on third down, good running the ball, they've been able to run out the clock on a couple of teams that hang on to it during the fourth quarter, get the ball away, run when they had to run it.

They've been good inside, close to the goal line, been able to get the ball in, so, I think they're an outstanding offensive football team, they're just as good on the defensive side of the ball.

They haven't given up anything the last couple of weeks. They can rush the passer, they can stop the run, turn the ball over, a lot of interceptions, play sound defense, they're well-coached, they're tough, strong on the line of scrimmage, they pursue well.

They've got a lot of great players and they're very well-coached. They've got a good football team. They pretty much do everything well. That's why they're 5-0.

Why has Randy Moss been so effective?
Well, Randy's a good football player, he's a very experienced guy, real competitive. He's seen a lot in terms of coverage and in the passing game. He can get open, he can catch the ball and he makes good adjustments. He's a really smart player and understands the passing game very well. Works hard.

Has he been better than you expected?

He's been pretty productive in a lot of places. He's had a good career. I don't think he's really done anything for us that he hasn't done anywhere else.

Two teams that are 5-0 mean something?

Well, I don't really think last week's game or the game two weeks ago have too much to do with this game. I think this game will come down to whichever team plays the best on Sunday. That's what it will be. I don't think the records ...

I know it's a nice story and everything, but I think the real story on this game is the team that plays the best on Sunday, and the preparation going into the game and the execution, and how they match up with each other.

I think that's really where this game is going to be won and lost, and that's where our focus is, so we're not really too concerned about last week or last year. We're concerned about getting ready for the Cowboys in the next five days.
Nick Folk made a big kick Monday. What do you look for in kickers?

Well, I think consistency is the big thing. I don't think anybody's kicking in this league that doesn't have a good leg. But what's really important is the player's consistency and his ability to handle different situations, different types of kicks and different things that come up on a play-to-play basis, whether it's the wind or the making an adjustment on the snap, or getting more height on the ball on shorter kicks, or driving the ball on deeper kicks, blocking out the distractions of playing on the road, or making a game-winning kick.

All those kind of things that all come back to consistency and being able to focus and do your job. I think probably every kicker in the league has got a good leg or he wouldn't be in this league.

Similarities between Moss and T.O.?

It's two different systems. Terrell Owens is a great player. He is a vertical player. He can get down the field. He's good on the underneath routes. He's a catch-and-run guy that can break tackles. He can make people miss in the open field. He's good on intermediate routes and crossing patterns and in cuts and stuff like that. He's a really hard guy to defend. I will say the same thing about [Patrick] Crayton and [Sam] Hurd. You can't take them for granted. They have made their share of plays too. Of course, the tight ends are awesome.

What has Adalius Thomas brought to your defense?

He's a good player. He does a lot of things. He can play the run. He can rush the passer. He can cover. He's smart. He plays different positions and handles different responsibilities and assignments. He's experienced. He's played against a lot of the teams we've faced one time or another in his career. He knows the players. He's a versatile guy who is smart. That has a number of different physical skills and can be used in a number of different ways. He's been a productive player for us.

What do you think about the legend of Romo?

Not being in that division, I haven't seen a lot of Tony. Of course, I saw him at the Pro Bowl. I spent some time with him there. He's a nice kid to be around. He's smart. He's got a lot of personality.

He's very competitive. He understands football well, from talking to him. He's got a good perspective and a good head on his shoulders. He wants to work hard and do well. Just watching him play, he can make all the throws. He's got a great arm. He can throw on the run. He's athletic against the pocket.

There was that play against St. Louis, on third down, when the ball was 30 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and he scrambled and picked up the first down. He's already got some touchdowns scrambling in the red area. He's a hard guy to contain. He can make all the throws downfield with his athleticism and arm strength. He's got great receivers and a great offensive line. He's hard to stop, and he's got great players with him.

What do you think about Wade Phillips' reputation?

I have a lot of respect and admiration for Wade and what he's done. He's been a great coach in this league. He's been very consistent as a defensive coach. His teams are always sound and very good fundamentally. They make you earn everything you get. They pressure you and play good pass coverage. They make you execute plays well. They are hard to block, and he's got enough variety in his schemes to keep you honest and make it unpredictable as to what he's going to do.

I've talked to him a little bit. I've had a number of chances to play against him and have a lot of respect for his coaching ability and the way his players play.

How important has nose tackle Vince Wilfork been?

Every position is important. The nose tackle is a big one because there are two bubbles on either side of him, with those guards uncovered. He's got three people that can potentially block him in a hurry, and that's more than any other player really has.

There are a lot of things a nose tackle has to be ready for. He has not just the center and guard. Lots of times they get whammed by a tight end or back, too, and double-teamed in pass protection. There is a lot of things they have to read and read quickly. Strength is a priority and so is quickness. It is hard to find people that do all those things. He's done it well for us. He's been a really good player for our defense and in our system. He's a smart guy who works hard. He's played really well for us.
