Best values

Over at Sportingnews.com, NFL writer Clifton Brown ranks each position, and one name that caught my eye was Patriots CB Randall Gay, who has turned down a contract proposal from New England and will hit the open market tonight at 11 p.m.

He was ranked just behind teammate Asante Samuel as the second best corner available, and Clifton marks him as the best value at the position.
Best value: Gay. He's a winner, he's good enough to start for most teams, and he's only 25.
I covered the guy for two-plus years and, when healthy, he proved to be a solid piece of the defense, who brought the versatility to play both safety and corner. Gay was marked ahead of Chargers CB Drayton Florence, who's another name of interest, having played for Wade Phillips in San Diego. Another of Brown's best values? Julius Jones at running back, who he ranked just behind Michael Turner at the position.

The "best value" at receiver is Bernard Berrian, though with revelations of the numbers being thrown around on him, there may not be a ton of truth in that anymore.

I don't know how anyone can rate them "best value" without even knowing how much they are going to get in the market. Wait for them to sign and then make that call.

Randall Gay? Is he kidding with this? Gay started all of 3 games last year and has never done much. I guess because he was on the roster of a winning team that makes him a winner.

He's probably just another system product like Samuel. And apparently not good enough to start in the system.

He played very well this past season and since he's likely to come at a low $$$, that's why he's of great value.

The thin remains of CBs left make him worth a lot more then he would otherwise. After this record setting year when everyone saw how valuable a pass rush is, it also emphasized the need for CBs.

Randy Gay has battled injuries past few years.

Early in career and at Pre Season camps he was ahead of Asante Samuel on depth charts and in scrimmages.

He is a value add for a #3 CB that can step in and start if need be.

Isn't Gay the one Rivers was calling "the sorriest corner in the league" when he went nutso after the playoff loss last year?

I wonder if anyone would want him if he were coming from, say, Carolina.

I don't think anything Rivers says holds weight. The dude is a ****** bag.
