Helping hands
When I was watching Sunday's game over again, it was pretty unbelievable to me how open Terrell Owens came on both his touchdowns, and how there was no safety help there.
Could it be that these one-on-ones are a result of teams worrying about someone other than T.O? Certainly, that's been the case with Jason Witten for a while now.
But on Sunday, it looked like it became more than that. It had to do with Patrick Crayton. I had to do with Sam Hurd.
“It’s just us getting better as a team and Tony getting back there and allowing plays to develop," Owens said. "There are plays where I’m going to run through there and I know I’m a decoy, and it’s going to allow Witten or Patrick to get open, and vice versa.
"I know the role that I possess, being the No. 1 receiver in this offense. I know that, I learned that from Jerry Rice. I learned that by being in a system, a West Coast system, and knowing what that No. 1 guy does in that role."
Rice, you may recall, had John Taylor and Brent Jones and Roger Craig with him earlier in his career, and then Owens later. Sometimes Rice was dominant, others he was a part of the offense. Same with T.O.
Where he was the focal point in Philly, he seemed to let the game come to him more in New York, while Crayton and Hurd (2 catches collectively in the previous two games combined) did their work. At the half, the numbers were fairly evenly distributed between Crayton (3-38), T.O. (3-31) and Hurd (2-21), with Witten being called upon in pass protection as the half went on, taking him out of the receiving equation.
Then, in the second half, The T.O. Show went into full effect. He had three catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns, while Crayton had just two for 28 and Hurd was shut out. And the reason they were quiet and T.O. was so damn loud, had something to do with the Giants playing the Cowboys more honest in the final 30, and displays versatility and a malleability to the gameplan that the Cowboys possess.
"The thing is, once they think they have us figured out, those guys come up with huge plays," Owens said of Crayton and Hurd. "That’s a tribute to us being on top of a gameplan and being ready."
