Brian Gaine update

Todd Archer E-mail News tips

Brian Gaine, the Cowboys assistant director of pro scouting, has not joined Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells in Miami.

I'm told the NFL has blocked a possible move to the Dolphins even though the Cowboys are willing to let Gaine leave now. Under league rules, Gaine would not be eligible to leave for the Dolphins until his contract expires unless he takes a job with "final say authority." His contract ends in the spring.

Since Ireland has that job in Miami, Gaine remains with the Cowboys - for now - unless the league decides to change its decision.

Gaine joined the Cowboys in 2005 after leaving the New York Jets, where he worked for Parcells.

Strange that the league can block it even if Jerry is willing. It's probably a good policy, though, because it prevents owners from looking like jerks.

Couldn't Jerry just wad up the contract?

My guess is Jerry called up the league for some backup.

Thank God the league stepped in and stopped this BS. No telling how many other scouts or position coaches would want to go to Miami. You let one guy walk then all of a sudden somebody else request to leave and then somebody else.

This should stop the bleeding for now, most contracts for front office guys expire AFTER THE DRAFT. Thus, we can keep our scouting department (minus Ireland) totally intact for this year's draft and then have plenty of time to find some replacements.:D

Also, today is the last day to interview assistant coaches for possible HC positons.

Goodell stepped in and bailed out Jerry;)

I have a feeling the league is not really liking what it going on in Miami. Parcells quits in Dallas and the next year takes a pretty much made up job title in Miami that ensures he can raid his former team or any other team because everyone will be getting a promotion in Miami. No other team has a person with the position and job description Parcells has taken in Miami. I applaud the league for this move. You basically have Parcells attempting to bring all the scouting knowledge, both college and pro players, to miami for free while Jerry has been paying the salaries all year long. I hope this gives Jerry a little more confidence to put a stop to what Parcells is trying to do. Let them have Sparano as Head Coach but noone else that you want to keep and that is under contract.

well, that should end the "front office raid" (of which we've lost 1 front office person so far, so the "raid" talK is a bit directed at drama) people have been worried about. damn, now the chicken littles will have to find something else to get all upset about.

shouldn't be hard.

If the guy don't want to be here, what's the difference. Ever watch a guy who's ready to move on at work? As soon as some one hands me a two week notice I tell them they get one weeks pay to stay home.

Better than getting ripped for two.

If he's already accepted a position elsewhere, and has every intention of going there ... do we really want him around in Dallas planning the team's draft? That's the Catch-22.

depends on the guy, dave. for the most part i agree with you. people get "short" and they want out now. i'd prefer to do the best i could in 2 weeks so i don't burn any bridges and my new employer would know they get the same consideration.

but yea, i see why you'd do that a lot.

BP taking advantage of the rules as they are now. The NFL will change the rules for sure, but right now BP can do this.

He doesn't work on the draft.

if he does decide he'd like a job elsewhere later, does he tank it up in dallas cause he had to stay or does he do his job like a professional so he's still a valuable commidity?

another catch 22.

He has nothing to do with the draft. He scouts pro players for free agency and trades. And, yes, I would want him around throughout this years process because I have been paying him all year to be able to assist at a very crucial part of the offseason. I certainly don't want everything he has been doing all year to go to Miami for free. If nothing else keep him away from them so out intentions are not known to them.

That makes little sense simply because Gaine obviously doesn't want to be here.

agreed. But does he do a great job to improve a team that will be competition in a few months?

Granted, it's a different conference, but it's still improving an adversary.

If he did in fact pull strings, then he can tell Gaine and other future hires that he was willing to let him go, while getting the benefit of him living out his contract. If Gaine doesn't like it, he has only himself to blame for signing the contract.

Who knows what really happened. I just think this is a good policy to put in place by the league. It's a bad position for Owner/GMs to be in, and it's not hurting anyone too much to make them honor the contracts they signed.

As for possibly slacking on his job, if he's that kind of person, then good riddance.

obviously? i'd not say it's obvious. i would say he'd like to work with parcells and even if he doesn't now, one day he likely will if his contract ends and the offer is still there.

but that doesn't mean he hates dallas, wants out now, crys on his way to work and other things that you do when you "obviously don't want to be" somewhere.

i think you're going to an extreme cause... well, that's what you do. but i believe it's a bit oversimplifying and a bit of a reach to say he doesn't want to be in dallas and it's sure not obvious simply because he wanted to work with parcells again.

i guess i could say 'obviously you hate jones and love to get your jabs in' but i doubt you'd agree and see it differently.

if he's here, he does the best he can here. i think we're letting "fanspeak" override the professional we're talking about.

Ice, you probably weren't directing this comment in my direction but I'm part of the "alarmist" crowd on this one. We WILL lose some coaching staff and we will probably lose some more of the scouting staff. That means Jerry has to:

1. Be part of the cowboys run to the Super Bowl
2. Work on rebuilding some of the coaching staff
3. Rebuild his scouting staff
4. Finish his stadium

I personally think that is a lot on his plate (I think his personal style contributes to this). In order for the Cowboys to remain a dominant force in the competitve NFC East, Jerry has to get most of this right and the decisions aren't easy. I AM worried, not because I'm a Jerry basher, but because the task seems so large to me.
