Many of you want Brian Stewart, the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, gone. But he's not going anywhere. Stewart should remain on the staff. In what role remains to be seen. But Dom Capers, if he comes here as the defensive consulant, will work with Stewart.

What Wade Phillips is trying to do, or Jerry Jones, depending on whom you ask, is build a veteran coaching staff. On offense, you have Skip Peete, Ray Sherman, Hudson Houck and Wade Wilson helping Jason Garrett.

On defense you have, as of right now, Dave Campo as the senior member of that staff to go along with Phillips. Adding Capers is a positive.

The way the Cowboys are handling it doesn't look very clean, but the end result might be a good thing overall.

I think.

If it is fact true that Wade ran the Defense with Stewart as the puppet.... then Stewart should just accept his new role(whatever it is) and learn... learn from a very talented assemby of defensive minds.

Long term. Its a good move for Stewart.

I guess we'll hear one way or another in the next week.

I doubt the Cowboys drag it out much longer than that.

I like it when Calvin and others read the forum and allay our concerns. I think Stewart should welcome Capers. The success of the Cowboys D elevates his chances to be a HC himself. Capers can help the success of the D.

I think that one coaching lesson that Stewart would do well to learn is to put ego aside and work together for the betterment of the team employing him.

Guys like Phillips, Campo and Capers have a lot more experience than he does and they seem willing to work together.

On the plus side, he's not getting fired to make room for Capers and they're not asking him to take a pay cut.

And he might learn some things along the way.

What's Stewart going to learn?

Capers doesn't even run Wade's defense. Yes, it's similar in that both are 34 zone blitzing schemes, but it's still different. The terminology and everything will be different for someone.

If it's Capers who has to learn a whole new scheme, why even hire him?

If we're running Capers' D instead of Wade's, why have Wade?

We need someone to hold the ship down till Garrett takes over. Besides, it's gives the defense a years advance on learning Capers' system so when he takes over as DC next year it's less of a learning curve.;)

I agree that with all the defensive minds and the experience that they have that Stewart could be able to gain more insight on the game that could better him in the long run of his coaching career.

If Capers becomes the D coordinator what title do you think Stewart will hold? Wasnt he the secondary coach under Wade in SD? Could he be a positions coach at LB? or would he get some complex title?

:hammer:

Stewart should talk to Tony Romo about taking the approach that Romo did when he was the 3rd-string QB

make the best of the situation and learn as much as you can from the vets, ask questions, and try hard

how to be a successful D-coordinator, not just in name only

who says we're changing the D? Wade says his D is easy for his players to learn, so I don't think a veteran 3-4 man is going to have much trouble getting down the terminology

I doubt Stewart is all knowing on defense. He has to learn something.

Why have Capers on Wade's defense? = DCC - Defensive Cerebral Collaboration... it cant hurt.

:starspin I agree. In the long run, having Capers with us can only help the defense, and I would hope that Stewart can put his ego in check long enough to recognize that fact. However Capers title and/or job description is written, I can only see good things coming out of it if we bring him in.
