There is too the little matter of Canty's contract out there as well. The Cowboys tendered Canty at the first-round level back in February, which had a one-year, $2.017 million offer attached to it. With the first-round pick set as compensation, there's no realistic scenario for the defensive end to solicit real offers from other teams, so he's planning on signing it after the April 18 deadline to negotiate an offer sheet with another club comes and goes.
"I have full intentions of signing the tender," Canty said, and there's no stronger evidence of that than his participation in the offseason program that kicked off last Monday.
Of course, he knows that next year's market could bring a bonanza, with a hightened premium being placed on versatile defensive linemen like Canty.
The good news, for Cowboy fans, is that he'd like for that long-term deal to come in Dallas down the road. And he's appreciative that the club took a chance on him in 2005, after an eye injury killed his draft stock, and valued him enough to stick the second-highest tender on him.
"I'm glad that the Cowboys extended the level of commitment they did towards me," Canty said. "I'm appreciative of it. Jerry Jones gave me an opportunity when a lot of people wouldn't touch me in the 2005 draft. I'm very thankful to Jerry for that, he's always been a fan of mine, he's always been in my corner.
"I can't say enough about him and enough about this organization. I'm glad I'm here and I want to continue to be here."
