Chris Canty speaks on moving from end to tackle

Chris Canty is moving from defensive end to tackle in the Giants 4-3 scheme. Canty and the Giants coaches don't think that's a problem.

"Chris can play both tackle and end," Giants coach Tom Coughlin told Giants.com. "He has been a 3-4 end, but he is a big, strong guy who can play inside on first and second downs and than move outside to end."

Canty also didn't have an issue with changing positions.

"I would love to do that," he told Giants.com. "I don't think it's going to be a big deal. I did some gap scheme things in Dallas. I am excited for the opportunity to do whatever they want me to do."

Losing Canty creates some line issues for the Cowboys.

Do they move Jay Ratliff from nose tackle to end?

Do the Cowboys keep Ratliff at nose tackle and let Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen fight for the starting end job?

Do the Cowboys draft an end and let him start the 2009 season?

Can the team find a partner and trade Roy Williams for a defensive end?

We'll see.

it would be nice to trade roy for a DE, or draft a DT or DE, cause Hatcher and Bowen are not ready for a startin job.

Defensively, we need a starter on the DL; a starter at ILB, a starter at OLB, and a starter at SS (most likely).

We've got some holes to fill.

Good news is, offensively, we should be ok for another year. Though, we need some OL to develop.

Canty quotes

From the Giants...

JERRY REESE

On the weekend: "We had a conviction on who we liked in the free agent market and who could help us get better. We let the three players know that, and the feeling was mutual. They want to win, and they wanted to be here. Fortunately, we were able to get the deals done quickly."

On Canty: "Chris is an athletic, big man who can play anywhere in our front. He gives us a lot of flexibility in that respect. Our defensive line did a very good job last year, but without Osi and Stray, we seemed to get worn down late in the season and we weren't able to generate the kind of pass rush that we’re accustomed to. Hopefully with the addition of Rocky and Chris, and with Osi coming back, that won't happen again."

TOM COUGHLIN

On Canty: "This is an outstanding 'get' for the New York Giants. Chris is a very highly touted player. He is an outstanding football player. I always like the idea of getting a player who has competed within the division."

On Canty's NY roots: ""He spent the first 11 years of his life in New York and he still has family here, and when we met he even talked about how special this area still is to him and the feeling he got flying back here."

On where Canty will line up: "Chris can play both tackle and end. He has been a 3-4 end, but he is a big, strong guy who can play inside on first and second downs and then move outside to end."

CHRIS CANTY

"I'm excited about getting the opportunity to come here and be a part of this team and this organization. I'm so happy. The Giants have a great winning tradition, and I am excited to come here and have a chance to win a championship."

On playing inside and outside: "I would love to do that. I don't think it's going to be a big deal. I did some gap scheme things in Dallas. I am excited for the opportunity to do whatever they want me to do."

Good for Chris. Going to a team that will compete for the division, possibly the Super Bowl, and getting paid.

Hit the trifecta, right thurr.

Ratliff to DE would be a wise move. I think they need to draft a true run stuffing pocket pusher at NT in the draft. A couple of guys from the SEC come to mind.

Sorry Tom, Canty is solid but not "outstanding" football player.

Whatever. The guy got no respect here. Sad. He is going to have an awesome career in NY. Too bad for the Cowboys we have cancers like TO and Kitna signed up.

Canty

athletic

:lmao:

Exactly... Where does this myth come from? I've seen it a million times, and I have no idea why.

Canty was great for us because he came straight from Parcells' exact system that Groh was running, and he was able to fit right in. And his height (really his arm length) are good for letting him hold up blockers. But he's not athletic, and he's really not even strong.

He's just a good, solid, smart, hardworking player with some talent. That's it.

That feels like a kick in the sack... a guy leaves the Cowboys, and is now excited he has a chance to win a championship. Jeez... what the hell happened to the Cowboys...

Should be tough for Romo to throw over him

.....Im really not ready to hate Canty yet, it doesnt feel right

........not until he says something like "Dallas was soft, we (the Giants) will never be caught quitting"
