We said it yesterday, we'll say it again - the chance to sign Ray Lewis does not look good. Not impossible, mind you, but not very likely.

Owner and GM Jerry Jones added to the notion Sunday.

"It would surprise me to see a big splash," Jones said.

Lewis, of course, would be a splash. A big splash. Can things change? Sure. But cap space is limited, especially with the team wanting to lock up DeMarcus Ware sometime in 2009.

The Cowboys did not sign a player in unrestricted free agency last year. Zach Thomas was technically a street free agent because he was cut by Miami. Ken Hamlin was tagged the franchise player, so he doesn't count either.

Chris Canty update

The Cowboys will not be able to get a deal done with defensive end Chris Canty before free agency begins Friday.

They met with Canty's agent, Brad Blank, on Sunday and simply are unable to make an offer to him that would prevent him from testing the market.

"They drafted Chris and gave him an opportunity and I think he'll do well in the free agency period," Blank said. "That's the way the business works."

If the market does not bear the fruit Canty seeks, then he could come back, but with an increase in the 3-4 teams in the league now he figures to be a prized target.

A team stupid enough to give Canty a 50 million dollar contract should be looked at like a Al Davis boob!

Good news is Todd Archer knows just as much as we do about what Dallas will and will not do. Only difference is we seem to be better informed about the cap thanks to Adam.

Less than a week now until the CZ meltdown begins

Jones has been telling people since almost the day after the season ended...no big moves in free agency

Sorry if I have trouble fully believing that. It's not like Jerry has a history of denying some thing only to turn around and do it.

I wouldn't mind if he picked up Olshansky to replace Canty.

I think Jerry tends to alternate big splash years.

Without researching

2004 was a quiet offseason
low level FA acquisitions

2005 big offseason
Henry, Rivera, Fergie, and an outstanding draft

2006 offseason
mid-level FA. T.O. was the big dog, but everybody else were mid-level acquisitions like Ayodele.

2007 offseason
high-level FA. Leonard Davis was a big one and Hamlin was a cheap acquisition.

2008 offseason
All internal extensions. The others were cheap acquisitions.

I expect to be closer to 2008.
Ware extension and then the rest are cheap acquisitions.

Signing Ware to the biggest contract ever for a defensive player and the biggest ever for the Cowboys would seem to be a pretty big splash.

I say let him walk and whoever else wants go they're replacable. Only ones that aren't are Ratliff and Ware.

You ask me Austin fits in that list. I'm sorry but were not going to find a WR that can fill his roll this year. A rookie is certainly not going to step in and I can't think of a young vet that can come in a do it either.

He's going to want the same money as Canty so I don't either coming here.

What's Austin role? Crayton should be able to do whatever Austin was doing and Felix should be able to handle Kick offs....

Crayton does have the ability to stretch the field like Austin does. Outside of Owens Austin is our only deep threat.

I don't think it's hard to find a guy that can stretch the field.

Sure, if you sit back and watch 40 times. Austin is a solid route runner, knows the offense, can return kicks, cover kicks, good hands, decent blocker.....sorry, his role is much greater then your giving him credit for.

I agree. Austin should surprise some people this year. I'd rather lose Hurd for sure and possibly Crayton than lose Austin. He does get open deep and may be as good as Crayton in the short game.

I think Austin can be a solid #2 in this league.

He's easily replaced.
