So now Irvin was a "deep threat" type WR?

Just in case you slept through the 90's which by your response you probably did, here's a highlight reel of Michael catching many 40+ hell even 50+ yard catches from Troy, and there's many more than this. And yah was a deep threat and middle threat he was the complete package.

Irvin wasn't considered a deep threat WR, maybe you can learn the game before calling out someone else.

Wow. I'll take that as a "yes".

FYI...if we're going to be making assumptions loosely based on our posts regarding football, you're not going to like the outcome.

Why should we worry about throwing deep? If we dink and dunk all the way down the field and score, that takes time off the clock. I do, however, think we do have the potential for the deep ball. We haven't seen the whole play book yet. This team will be explosive offensively and defensively! Mark it.

Agree here: I've seen other teams throw deep with ROOKIES yet we haven't even tried to go deep as many times as I saw camp this summer not once that I was there did I see none of the receivers go deep for a long pass. I think Garrett is happy with what he has all the middle stuff plus all the plays that he has set up for 2 tight end sets. Is it gonna be enough? no, we need a deep threat definetly anybody who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves, les we forget the impact that Irvin had on the whole offense when they knew he would go deep, nuff said.
Irvin was not a deep threat. Roy Williams is faster than he was.

Sam Hurd is considered the "slow" one and he had 5 passes of 20+ yards in '07 on only 19 total receptions. He had 17 first downs on those 19 catches and a career average of 16.2 yards per.

Not too shabby.

Maybe I'll call Hurd the SlowPoke from now on. :D

Sam Hurd looks like he has really turned the corner this year. I like our WR corps this season.

Some people equate throwing deep to success in the NFL. They also think the fortunes of the 2009 Dallas Cowboys are going to be directly related to their ability (or inability) to execute those big plays. I don't.

While I agree there may not be as many big plays as the last couple of years, I think we will have a better ability to sustain drives and score points similiar to the 2007 team.

We don't need anybody to streak fear in a defense, let the D sleep on us all they want. Our O just needs to continue to move the chains and score points. Austin can get deep and so can RW11. Defenses fearing us isn't important, our O consistently moving the ball is. Our O will be dominating at times this year because they execute.

I disagree. The offense needs to show they can get deep. This pushes the safeties back and opens up the running game. Austin, Williams, Hurd, Jones need to get the defenses attention.

I absolutely love our wide receivers.

ESPN's Matt Mosley can take the Giants group, he was vocal about it during the off-season, I'll take ours with a smile on my face.

The ability to sustain offense is more important than being able to take and connect on deep shots.

I'm very excited about Tony Romo getting back to correctly running the scheme this year instead of waiting on downfield routes to develop and targeting Terrell Owens enough to keep him from erupting.

And I don't think our big plays will suffer at all.

Defenses aren't going to be able to sit back and take away the pass with our running backs presenting a real problem for them.

Having a burner is definitely overrated.

Just give me good route runners that have decent speed and good hands and I will take that over a burner everyday.

And last time I checked, we have those types of guys.

I disagree.

Defenses will pack it down if we cannot show that we can get deep at will. This will hamper our running game and make it more difficult to operate in general.

I could be wrong, we just need to show we can do it. I know RW used to be able to get deep, I just haven't seen it in a couple of years. Austin has to show he can get deep consistently.

The 90's team lacked a burner. I have no doubt this team will have plenty of big plays this season.

Harper and Kevin Williams were able to get deep, very well too.

We'll have to see....Right now, we really haven't had the opportunity to go deep. Although.......

In the Raider game, Austin had beaten #21 badly on a streak. As a matter of fact, he was interfered with. That same game, we saw Hurd get open deep a couple of times.

Against the Titans, Roy had beaten Finnegan down the field (it would've been about a 30 yard TD), but Romo missed. Austin was also WIDE OPEN and missed badly by Kitna.

We've had WRs get open deep. I think it'll come.

I agree.

Austin CAN run by people. Can he do it and be effective with any consistency is the question.

RW showed me he still has some wheels when he went by Finnegan last game, I hope that continues. There was a time 2 years ago when i thought RW was the most talented young WR in the game. That has now changed but I'm hopeful that my observation proves correct this year...

Kevin Williams was a burner though.

K-Dub was a terrible wide receiver.

His best season came in '95 where he was on pace for slightly over 400 yards until the finale against Arizona (used in Jerry McGuire) where he dropped 200 on the Cardinals due to them triple covering Michael Irvin.

Williams never had more than 2 touchdown receptions in a season, had only one season with double digit 20+ yard receptions, 3 career catches of 40+ yards and a career average of only 13 yards per catch.

He wasn't a consistent route runner and never gained Troy Aikman's trust.

Punt returner?

Yeah, I could live with that.

Receiver?

Please, no.

They must be too young to remember Kevin Williams. He was a major disappointment at WR. Harper had good speed but wasn't anymore a threat than Austin.
