Cowboys' No. 3 WR in Cleveland will be Jason Witten

The Cowboys will have only two wide receivers active on the season opener who have an NFL reception, but Wade Phillips didn't seem too worried.

Expect to see Jason Witten, who is coming off a 96-catch, 1,145-yard season, line up in the slot a lot against the Browns.

"Witten can be a third receiver," Phillips said. "Obviously, he's a force as a pass receiver. ... There's no reason you can't give it a Colts look where you've got witten put in the slot like they did with [Dallas] Clark."

Phillips mentioned that they can move Witten around because the other tight ends are playing well. Second-round pick Martellus Bennett should have a significant role in the season opener.

First-round RB Felix Jones is another guy the Cowboys can use in the slot.

Well, who didn't see this one coming--namely using Witten and Felix Jones as receiving options for the time being.

Oh wait...

Only two receivers will be active? God forbid we have an injury to TO or Crayton DURING THE GAME.

That's gonna mess up our third receiver stats this year.

And really, that's the most important part

That's a frightening thought.

Witten as a WR might allow us to keep Hannah on the 53.

I doubt this has any effect on the numbers at each position whatsoever. I'm not saying we won't keep Hannah, I just don't see any permanence to this. I'd actually say that this is a testament to the coaches faith in the ability of Bennett more than anything else.

Get the best players on the field.

More of the same rhetoric we've been getting since they decided against getting a receiver in the offseason.

Should we be surprised?

I just hope it doesn't come back to haunt them, or ruin the team's Super Bowl hopes.

FWIW...it said 'that have an NFL reception'. I doubt that includes preseason receptions. I doubt we only have two active WR's, very much.

Only two who have caught an NFL pass was the statement.

Read much? We will have more than two receivers active.

For those who only read the first half of the sentence ...

Common sense should tell you there is no way the Cowboys, Wade, etc. would announce the active roster for the first game over a week before the season starts and before the last major cut-down day.

they will just use him in the slots not actually move him to WR.
umm...

What's the big difference between a 'slot receiver' and a 'wide receiver'?

Would it surprise you to see Witten split out wide?

no, the guy made it seems like witten would become a WR so keeping Hannah as a 4 TE would be justified.

I think this really hinges more on Bennett being reliable not just as a reciever, but as a pass/run blocker in some situations
