Archer: Interest in Saints' Sharper? Should Cowboys cut ties with Roy Williams?

7:19 PM Wed, Feb 17, 2010

News tips Dallas Morning News Cowboys writer Todd Archer answered your questions about the Cowboys. Some highlights ...

On whether the Cowboys should go after Saints safety Darren Sharper:

The age would be a worry. And I don't think the Saints let him go. I think something would get done with him before free agency started. Yes, he made a lot of picks, but I can't get the sight of Joseph Addai making him look old in the Super Bowl out of my head. It all depends on price, I guess, but I don't see him leaving NO.

On whether the team should cut ties with WR Roy Williams:

No. Here's why - Jerry Jones has to pay him $9.5 million here in March. It was easier to cut TO last year because Jerry owed him no money. With Williams, that $9.5 million is guaranteed. He's not going to give up on this deal and still pay the guy that kind of cash.

I thought TO still counted 9.5 mil?
There is a difference between a cap hit and money owed. We still had the cap hit, but he was not paid. Anyone who thinks TO got $9.5 million from the Cowboys and $6.5 million from the Bills for a $17 million season is completely wrong.

Whether or not the money goes directly into TO's pockets makes no difference.

TO still counted 9.5 mil against the cap.

It just matters to people who still can't get TO out of their system.

That's what I said Bob. TO counted against the Cap, but was not owed the cash. Roy would be owed the cash. It's simple economics.

But it would cost the Cowboys the same amount to cut him? Correct?

does the media think that if they say it loud enough and long enough that Jerry is going to cut Roy Williams. For the 1,000,000th time...Jerry gave up a 1st and a 3rd..and millions of dollars. He is NOT going to scrap it after 1.5 years. Sure not all draft picks and trades work out, but if they thought enough about him to give up this much, why can't people understand that they will exhaust every opportunity to make it work before they just toss it out? Roy needs to get better, but so does the OL, the O-coordinator and his chemistry with the QB. This is such a DEAD issue.

In an uncapped year? Are you even paying attention?

yeah addai made him look old. yet the saints defense controlled the colts. plus is he a better option than hamlin? that's the question.

I agree. You do not make a deal like this and give up on it after 1.5 years. I know many are disappointed including RW himself at how things have gone thus far but no way is Dallas going to walk away at this stage.

That may be a different story after next season then again if the staff can find ways of getting RW more involved and of course RW steps up then he could remain for a good while.

Add a year to his age and a new defense, can he replicate that? A better question.

Totally 100% agree on Roy. No way he's cut in an uncapped year where he is guaranteed that much cash. Not even a question.

I lobbied for Sharper 5 years ago. People told me he was too old then. I wasn't having it. But he is too old now. I like what we have at safety now. I may be the only one who likes Sensy and Hamlin. But no way should we go after a safety as old as Sharper now.

This illusion that Sharper is the ultimate safety is flat wrong. I watched plenty of Saints games by virtue of being friends with one, and actually just got back from there yesterday after attending Mardi Gras and all that.

While they love Sharper, they will point out the fact that he does get burned somewhat regularly and while he will lay out a guy now and then, he's not much of an accomplished tackler.

His ints are there, and they pretty much have been his entire career, but his coverage and tackling skills aren't spectacular.

I don't know how many times this particular reason must be mentioned before people in here get it through their heads that RW is not going anywhere.

NO... It would be ALOT more if they cut him ( and there was a cap ).. The 9.5 mills he's going to get is part of the 26 mills guaranteed he got when he signed the contract after he got traded.

IF there was a cap, this thing wouldn't even be a thought, much less a conversation.

Care to figure out what the cap hit on a 26 mills guaranteed would be on a player released on it's second year of the contract ?

It would be like the Raiders cutting JaMarcus Russell right now while still having a salary cap:

COST PROHIBITED !!!
