Forgot to mention last week that FB Deon "Cricket" Anderson sweat so much during minicamp that he weighed in at 242 pounds. That's after ballooning up to 263 during the winter.

Cricket explained that he keeps his metabolism up by constantly snacking on junk food. He confirmed that strength coach Joe Juraszek had not approved of that particular training method.

One guy always rants on this here blog about me beating him down with the "Cricket" bit since it is not an authorized nickname. Well, Cricket gave me the OK to call him Cricket, so nanny nanny boo-boo.

Here's your video evidence, which also gives the general public a glimpse at Cricket's undefeated pencil.

Why would anyone in the NFL let themselves get this overweight and out of shape? It seems like players would keep in shape since their jobs depend on it.

I hope he comes back with the same enthusiasm and fire he had prior to the injury. We need him to get better, not take steps backwards. He is not guaranteed a spot on the team, so he should not take anything for granted.

You don't intend to. But once the pounding of the season is over you just want to take a break. You tell yourself it's only 2 or 3 weeks to let the aches and pains subside, but it never is.

I would bet that come the next off-season that Cricket will learn to take care of himself better in the off-season.

If he doesn't, I think he'll find he won't last too long in the NFL.

I wonder if the Cowboys bring in nutritionists, etc. to help the players improve their habits?

Cricket or not, this guy looks like he'd be a lot of fun to have around in the lockerroom, on the sidelines and on the field.

Totally agree.

I get the feeling this guy doesn't get it... He might be the kind who needs some competition to stay on track.

:hammer:

Couple this with the devastating effect that football have on your metabolism makes for an interesting off season experiment. :)

Exactly. People wonder why wrestlers (the real kind), boxers, and football players are overweight later in life. It's no secret at all. All the time spent cycling your body with weight loss or weight gain takes your metabolism and throws it out of whack. Then when your body no longer is doing all the active things that burn up the calories and fats, it stores them up.

In football it would shock people to see how you have to eat leading up to a game to put on weight. You have to do it or the rigors of the game will drain you. I've known of guys losing up to 15 pounds during one game. You have to put that weight back on before the next game. I would regularly lose between 5 and 8 pounds every game. Most I ever lost was about 10 I think. If you don't put the weight back on then you are literally too weak to really play. I tried it. I know most guys do and have similar results. You are completely sluggish.

That is an aspect of why guys get into steroids that nobody ever really considers. The roids allow you to manipulate your weight easier without carb and calorie gluttony. Yes, it's a shortcut and a performance enchancer and all that other stuff. It also makes guy's lives easier. That's why there's such a preponderance of guys doing it.

Once the season is over your eating habits are estbalished. If you simply stop eating it crashes your metabolism even more. Are there guys who simply start working out right away and avoid weight gain? Of course there are and I admire those guys. Trust me when I say, they go through hell to keep their bodies that tuned up. Not everyone wants to go through hell. You got to have a bit of vanity pushing you. Some guys just want to heal up before they start pushing again.

Wrestlers and boxers are exactly the opposite in that they try and cut weight. They start eating Ex-lax, wearing plastic bags to sweat, and all kinds of things trying to strip their bodies of weight. Then after they make weigh ins those guys pig out like crazy to bring their strength back up.

It kills you.

lol @ bbgun.

And if this is what Deon wants to do, who cares? If it works for him, let him do it. And if he's out of the league in a couple of years, who cares? He's JAG. Its not going to hurt us anyway. You can find FBs like him in free agency/the draft every years just as "good" as him.

Cricket didn't go through some torturous season, though... He was put on IR after what, the sixth or seventh game of the year? And he barely even played before that. So I don't think he's eating junk now to get over the rigors of a game he last played seven months ago.

It's the same thing though. Inactivity.

You cannot go from stuffing yourself with food to maintain your weight to inactivity (whether it's from the season's end or injury) and not add some pounds.

Most players eat less in the off season, but it takes time for your stomach to shrink where you don't feel absolutely famished.

I have never been that concerned about players being a bit overweight because I know they can cut the weight and firm up relatively fast. Some players don't have to. They simply love the workouts and never stop.

Either way though, your eating habits take time to taper off.

I am naturally heavy, my body loves to put on weight, that said it was a ***** to maintain weight for me sometimes. I would eat a half gallon of ice cream and still shed weight.

When I stopped with all the exercise\abuse I was so used to eating that way I just kept on doing it. It's not something a ton of people would even think about, god knows I didn't.
