DeMarcus Ware is a man on the move

One thing Wade Phillips wants to do more often this season is line up DeMarcus Ware at different spots than his normal right side.

We saw some of that in the morning practice. Ware came off the left edge several times, mostly working against backup RT Pat McQuistan.

As you might imagine, McQuistan didn't fare very well in that matchup. But there aren't very man right tackles in the league who won't look like a turnstile if left alone against the league's reigning sacks leader, which is why Phillips wants to create those kinds of matchups.

"The better pass blockers are at left tackles, but the more crafty guys are on the right side. They usually run to the right side, so you have those big, strong guys over there. You have to find a way to outwit them."

Or he can just blow by them, but Ware is too humble to say that.

There are probably only 2-3 LTs in the whole league who can probably match up with DWare with any chance of success on more then an occasion.
So getting whipped by him is not that big a deal. I guess more to the point is if you can show you can learn and get better so that you can handle the other guys that you might be able to stop.

That's like bringing a gun to a knife fight.

Anyone else think Ware takes the Sack record this season?

Hmm I dont know. I dont think so just because everyone is going to key on him so much.

Then again Ware has too much talent and works too hard. I just dont know if he breaks it this year, but I think he will sometime in his career.

I sure do. I think he will hit his goal of 25.

I love this kid. He is my absolute favorite player. I can't take my eyes off him when the game is on. He is the best defender in the NFL without a doubt.

That's why we're moving him around more, though.

We've heard Rat and Bradie say we're going to be even more aggressive this year. One way or another, opposing QBs are in for a beating.

If Ware is going to break the record, I think this is his best chance. Wade is to pass rushers what Mike Shanahan is to running backs.

Jeeze, I don't know. No player has ever racked up back to back 20+ sack seasons (as far as I'm aware), so the odds don't seem to be in Ware's favor.

Strahan went from 22.5 sacks to 11.

Gastineau went from 22 to 13.5.

White went from 21 to 18.

Doleman went from 21 to 11.

Taylor went from 20.5 to 12.

Thomas went from 20 to 13.5.
Not only did none of those other guys manage back to back 20+ sack seasons, none of them ever reached the 20 sack mark again, period.

Gastineau and White were both close to back to back seasons, with Gastineau getting 19 sacks before his 22 sack season and White getting 18 after his 21 sack season.

To take another look, Ware is going into his 5th season and has had a 2.5 times improvement in his yearly sack total, from his first season until the end of last year. After their 5th season as a starter, this is where the other guys stood.

Strahan - 3.3
Gastineau* - 2.75
White - 0.85
Doleman - 42.0
Taylor - 2.73
Thomas - 0.80
Now, we'll throw out Doleman's multiplier, as it's simply a product of him starting his career with a 0.5 sack season. We're also going to assume that Ware won't regress to below 8 sacks, so the White and Thomas multipliers are ignored as well. That leaves us with a fairly tight (if limited) grouping of data.
Strahan - 3.3
Gasinteau - 2.75
Taylor - 2.73

Avergaed out, the multiplier is 2.93. So, on average, those three guys had improved 2.93 times over their first season sack total. How would that look for Ware?

Well, if he improved upon his first season at the average rate then this year he'd be looking at 23.4 sacks. If he performed at the low rate, identical to Taylor's, then he'd be at 21.8 sacks. And, if Ware just blows up and continues his all-world run and mirrors Strahan, then he'd end the season with 26.4 sacks.

So, while no other defensive player has done it, as long as Ware keeps improving then it looks like he has pretty good odds of either recording another 20 sack season and/or breaking the sack record. At this point, his improvement rate has been lower than the other three guys, which suggests that there is still room for him to grow.

That's scary.

The key to moving Ware around is if the rest of the defense can hold up their end of the bargain.

Ware is not only one of the best rushers, he is one of the best edge defenders also and if you take him off an edge and move him thge other guys have to pick up the slack. I am not so sure they can do that consistently.

If they can, Ware will break the record IMO because no matter how much you key on him, moving him around creates a lot of confusion, just like Wade did with Merriman that first year.

Haven't heard much of Keith Brooking either. But yeah, mention of Spencer has been strangely non-existent. I mean even Justin Rogers is getting pub.
