ESPN is about to launch a new campaign designed to strengthen its grip on the sports media world.
The World Wide Leader will launch ESPNChicago.com in April. It is being billed as a "24/7 Chicago sports operation."
ESPN will provide Chicago-specific original stories, blogs, videos, chats etc.
"We already have a user base with millions of people coming to (ESPN.com) looking for Chicago sports," ESPN's Marc Horine told the Chicago Tribune. "At its core, the mission is simple: to super-serve Chicago sports fans."
I checked with the folks at ESPN in Bristol this morning and confirmed that a similar site is in the exploration phase for Dallas. ESPN owns its radio affiliate in Chicago It also owns ESPN-FM 103.3 here. Where it owns radio stations, it will explore launching stronger city-specific web sites.
"It's safe to say that in addition to Chicago, we will explore Dallas, New York, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh but there is no timetable set," said an ESPN person in the know.
Yeah. Put your money on ESPNDALLAS happening. And that would be sooner rather than later.
