Gerald Sensabaugh simplifies things for Wade Phillips

Wade Phillips and Co. spent an awful lot of time scheming to cover tight ends the last two seasons. (Often unsuccessfully.)

That shouldn't be the case this season. That's because they trust strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh in coverage, something that certainly couldn't be said for his predecessors at the position.

"He can play corner-type coverage, so any time they split somebody out and we want to play man-to-man, we can continue to do that," Phillps said. "Whereas before we either had to play man and give our safety some help or go to some type of zone where we could cover up for him."

That theory will be tested, considering the Cowboys' schedule features foes with elite pass-catching tight ends such as Kellen Winslow, Tony Gonzalez, Chris Cooley and Antonio Gates.

Phillips cited the way the Giants used to flex out Jeremy Shockey to exploit departed Roy Williams as an example. And the Cowboys will see Shockey in New Orleans this season. But he's fallen from the ranks of elite tight ends.

Thanks for posting Cbz.

I hope Sensabaugh is a player. Can't say I saw a lot of him while in Jacksonville.

With all the praise being heaped on Sensabaugh already, I'd like to see him signed to a long-term deal.

Seems like his addition can be a huge plus for this defense and erase all the -'imaginary' shortcomings of his predecessor.

Heck, budget giving him Hamlin's money in 2010 if need be.

After one good season, Hamlin sure didn't play like the same guy last season, much less being worth what he's being paid.

Only problem there is we all know he can play but do we know he can use his brain all off-season and stay out of trouble.

He couldn't avoid trouble previously with millions on the line not sure I'd trust him now with those millions.

That's true, but I'd put Sensabaugh's issues in the 'stupid' category rather than the 'troublemaker' category.

I see Matt Jones' screw-up the same way.

And I think 'stupid' players can be taught to do it right.

The 'troublemakers' on the other hand seem to always be troublemakers.

It should definitely effect the size of the signing bonus he receives, but you can make up for that by putting in annual roster bonuses if he stays on the straight and narrow.

while he may not be as bad as Roy Williams in coverage....he will get beat just like any other guy in the NFL gets beat...because guess why? This is the NFL and sometimes the offensive players beats the defensive player. But because it is Dallas...because everything is overhyped and super sized. The media will gleefully point out that Sensabaugh gave up a play and he is no better than Roy Williams. Never mind the fact that EVERYONE in the NFL gets beat....EVERYONE. What you HOPE to accomplish with better personell is force the opposition to find more creative ways to attack you...instead them just lining up and say lets go after this guy all day. Which puts you in comprimising position as a defense.

Roy was definitley not the greatest cover safety in the NFL, but I hope fans stay patient and understand that just because we have a better cover safety, that does not automatically mean this guy will never be beat. And if you don't beleive me pull out tapes of Darren Woodson. A fine, fine Safety. But you have a selective memory if you sit here and say he never got beat. What he did was give the team confidence to run certain defenses packages. What he did was make the offense think twice about targeting him ALL THE TIME. If Sensabough can do that....we will be a better defense.

I'd see how both Sensy and Michael Hamlin do, if Sensy is great this year, but Hamlin progresses nicely, I'd rather we let Sensy go

What about letting Ken go instead?

If he shows in the true pre-season, you may have a point.

Right now everyone is playing it what some call the "underwear league"--which is not at all real football.

I'm very optimistic about him and can't wait to see him going full speed in a game.
