HOF voter Rick Gosselin: Among other Cowboys for Hall, Larry Allen most likely

In a chat Friday on ***BANNED-URL***, Pro Football Hall of Fame writer and member of the selection committee Rick Gosselin was asked about other Cowboys' chances to make the Hall of Fame in future years, specifically Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Drew Pearson, Chuck Howley Daryl Johnston, Jay Novacek, Larry Allen and Darren Woodson.

"The door isn't closed on the Cowboys of the 1970s but it's barely ajar. The committee seems to have drawn the line at nine Steelers from the 1970s. L.C. Greenwood was a multi-time finalist but could never gain enshrinement. So that's nine Hall of Famers off a team that won four Super Bowls.

The 1970s Cowboys have seven Hall of Famers off a team that won two Super Bowls. The Steelers have two more players -- one for each Super Bowl they won more than the Cowboys. I don't think that's out of whack. Larry Allen will likely be in Canton one day but Novacek and Johnston would be on the bubble.

I like Moose, but he's not a Hall of Famer, IMO.

Woodson should have a better chance.

I think we are pretty much all in agreement that Too Tall and Pearson should be in. I agree there's no doubt Larry Allen will go but Darren Woodson deserves it a bunch also. I don't think he'll ever get in, but he was maybe the best safety to play the game as far as being able to do everything.

The Cowboys are the team of the 90's and they're only going to get 4 players in from it. Yea that seems fair.

The 7 Cowboys were from essentially two different teams even though they overlapped. The 60s-early 70s guys like Lilly, Renfro, & Hayes and the mid 70s-80s guys like Dorsett & Randy White and the two who were on both in Rayfield Wright and Staubach.

The 9 Stealers were all from the 70s and all 9 played on all 4 SB teams.

The Stealers were pretty much contenders only in the 70s and a little into the 80s (1972-84) but the Cowboys were contenders from 1966-1985, 20 consecutive winning seasons.

Not quite the same IMO.

Using Super Bowl Victories to discern the merits of a HOF career is absurd. Otherwise, Dan Marino wouldn't be in the HOF and neither wold OJ Simpson.

Rings are only handy when comparing two players- and then only if they both played in SBs.

Everyone calls the Cowboys O-line of the 90's the greatest OL ever. Not just Cowboys fans, everyone. You hear it all the time when comparisons are made between Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders.

1 Hall of Fame player on the greatest O-line ever.

I think Larry Allen will be the last Cowboy from the 90s to get into the Hall of Fame.

Hos, those 90s Offensive Lines were good but some may say they were good as a "unit" but when you look at "individually", I think Larry Allen is the only true Hall of Famer.

If Erik Williams hadn't gotten in that accident, he may have had a chance.

Should all be in the hall if you ask me.

Larry Allen should be a 1st ballot lock.

LA will be the only one. And to be really honest he is the only one who SHOULD BE outside of Erik but he did not play long enough before the injury. It is what it is. Looking at the current class to me Little does not belong.

Woodson should have a better chance.

But how do you measure a Hall of Fame fullback?

That's why I have a problem with Hall of Fame voting. Voters tend to lump all running backs in the same category, i.e., rushing yards and touchdowns.

But fullbacks don't get a lot of yards or touchdowns. Does that mean no fullback who've played in the NFL are worthy of the Hall of Fame?

It's the same with kickers and punters.

You ought to be able to make the Hall based on your position and the contributions you made to the game from your position.

If you look at it that way, Darryl Johnston definitely belongs in the Hall.

But he won't make it in.

For the record, Haley, Woodson, Jimmy Johnson (yes, I believe he belongs because you can't write the book of NFL history without Jimmy Johnson and how he quickly turned around a dominant franchise starting essentially from scratch) and Darryl Johnston (along with Darryl Johnston) should be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Jerry Jones will get there eventually too.

According to Goose's math, we should get three more than the Bills. They already have four and could get one or two more. So we should get at least seven from the 1990s.

Right, Goose?

And Larry Allen didn't contribute on the first two Super Bowl teams so the arguments against Emmitt become even weaker when you consider Allen wasn't there for Smith's early years.

Erik Williams would have been if it had not been for the car accident injuries.

Yeah, because it's an asinine backhanded attempt to try and diminish one person's accomplishments by boosting/complimenting the other players around him. It's pretty stupid if you ask me.

Just like the SI writer (Peter King? I can't remember) I heard on the radio try and say Aikman wasn't a hall of fame QB because he had Irvin and Smith on the offense with him, when Aikman was up for the HOF. Then turned around and said "There should be more Broncos in the hall, because Elway didn't do it all himself".
