Great expectations in Baltimore

The Ravens have Super Bowl expectations now that quarterback Steve McNair has had a year in Brian Billick's offensive system. The Ravens are excited about the big-play potential running back Willis McGahee brings what historically has been a grind-it-out offense, and they expect defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to have a Pro Bowl season.

The best crowd of the season turned out for Baltimore's morning practice Friday -- more than 6,800 -- and I talked to former Sooner great Joe Washington at the afternoon practice. Washington was traded to the Baltimore Colts by San Diego in 1978 and never left the area. He's now an executive at Wachovia Bank.

The one potential snag in Baltimore's Super Bowl express is a three-game, late-season stretch when the Ravens play the San Diego Chargers (Nov. 25), New England Patriots (Dec. 3) and Indianapolis Colts (Dec. 9) on consecutive weekends. The Patriots and Colts both visit Baltimore. The four teams are all the pre-season favorites in the AFC division races. A lot of tie-breakers could be determined during that stretch.
