Rookie TE Martellus Bennett made it through an entire Hard Knocks episode without looking like a fool.

More important, the behind-closed-doors scenes confirmed what Jerry and the coaches have been saying publicly. They really do believe that Bennett is making significant progress and will contribute right away.

There's no excuse for snickering behind your position coach's back or arguing about something as trivial as tucking your shirt in during practice, scenes that were lowlights of the HBO series for Bennett. But you've got to give the kid a little bit of a break.

Imagine if the dumbest things you did during your 21-year-old summer were shown on national TV. That's what has happened with Bennett.

The Hard Knocks folks identified him as a storyline right off the bat -- probably for the same reasons I was happy to hear the Cowboys call his name on draft day -- and stuck with it. He's been under the microscope since training camp started.

The Cowboys knew Bennett had some maturity issues when they drafted him, and that's why TE coach John Garrett has been on his case since draft weekend. They knew he needed to be coached hard to fulfill his potential, and he's made major progress.

This snippet of a quote from Jason Witten seemed to get overlooked by folks who commented on my post about the tight ends' tough-love relationship: "But you've got to figure it out first, and he's well on his way to doing that."

We saw video evidence last night.

I am almost positive most of this was generated for TV, funny how it all comes together as the series winds down.

I think he's freaking hilarious. I also think he's going to be a tremendous asset as a blocker and in the Red Zone where his leaping ability and 6'6" height make him an unreal threat.

I think Garrett is drooling with the thought of Owens, Witten, Barber, and Bennett in the redzone.

I think the young man has all kinds of potential, and I think he needs to figure a bunch of things out. He's on his way though...

the funniest part were people harping on his maturity issues

HELLO! he's 21 years old, it took me till I was nearing 25 before I started to calm down and start to get serious, and I'm still immature as ****

I have been trying to point this out for a while now. Bennett is not a bad kid, a bit immature yes but he will not always be immature. He has very good talent and I think will be a very good player for us.

He's always had potential, but I'm still reserving judgement until they get the real games going. I can't shake the notion that this kid has a Manny Ramirez quality to him. Liveable conditions if he performs, I suppose, but I would hate to start hearing "that's just Martellus being Martellus" bounced around with regularity.

I agree.

I think he's an immature kid who made a bit of a bad impression.

All we saw was a kid acting the fool on Hard Knocks and not doing much early on in preseason.

Then we saw a guy playing well and looking like he's 'getting it'.

He's out of any 'doghouse' with me and I hope that he can play up to his vast potential.

For both his sake and the team's.

Your book is not very realistic. Hell there are TE in the league who are full time starters who do not have 8 TD in a season including Jason Witten who last year put up 7 the most since he has been in the pros. Dallas Clark another starter had the most TD catches last year with 11 but you expect a rookie who will not start and will not be in on as many plays as our starting TE to produce more? Unbelievable

Me too. Half of my team were comical like him. I still don't get the backlash and the general consensus that he was a draft day mistake.

25? I guess I was a late bloomer, if I would have gotten married before 28, I would have been divorce by 29, lol.

Bennett > Fasano

Enough said.

Way better, not even close.

Also, imo he is a better blocker then Witten was his rookie year. Alas the kid still won't catch a break with some of the sky is falling crowd.
