The Sports Business Journal, a great industry offering, had a story yesterday that mentioned ESPN's interest in televising the Cowboys' first home game at the new stadium. That drew the interest of the several highly-placed editors at SportsDay. They wanted us to follow up. Every network wants every Cowboys game it can get. The networks bid for them all and the NFL doles out Cowboys games like gold.
I tried to tell the editors it wasn't really news that ESPN wanted a Cowboys game but they pulled rank. Here's the story as it appeared in this morning's Sports Day. It would be news if ESPN or any other network didn't want a Cowboys game So I called around and what do you know...NBC, Fox, CBS and ESPN all wanted the game. That's like asking every NFL team if they might have interest in DeMarcus Ware if they could have him for no additional cost.
The money quote came from a source at one of the networks who said, "We'd want a Cowboys game played at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday night from a minor league baseball stadium in North Dakota."
Odds for televising Cowboys season opener:
NBC: 2-to-1
Fox: 4-to-1
ESPN: 6-to-1
CBS: 100-to-1
