Jason Witten will be spending part of his off-season in Southwest Asia as part of the NFL-USO tradition that started more than 40 years ago.
Witten will be joined by fellow Pro Bowlers Vernon Davis (San Francisco), Joe Thomas (Cleveland) and Mario Williams (Houston) for the weeklong visit to the U.S. troops at military bases throughout the region.
I'll try to reach Witten today for his comments on visiting the troops, but I have to tell one story about these trips first.
Years ago when I was covering the Dolphins, Jason Taylor went on a similar trip and he missed an OTA workout. We were instructed to ask coach Dave Wannstedt about it after and he would fill us in. Wannstedt, the former Cowboys assistant, is a terrific guy and is doing good things at his alma mater, Pitt.
So the practice ends and we ask Wannstedt where Taylor was and his response was: "He's off on one of those UFO tours."
Immediately we all started laughing. We didn't know Taylor was so big into extraterrestrial life, but Dave corrected himself and Taylor later called it one of the most rewarding trips he ever made.
