They roomed together at the 2005 rookie minicamp, a couple of second-day picks eager to prove themselves. Jay Ratliff and Chris Canty have been a couple of 300-pound peas in a pod ever since.

They play next to each other on the field and hang together off the field. They're a pain in the butt to opposing offenses, and good luck to the reporter that says the wrong thing in their corner of the locker room.

Ratliff will be a fixture on the Cowboys' defensive line for several more years. The team made sure of that by giving him a five-year, $20.5 million deal late last season.

Ratliff will be almost as happy if/when Canty signs a long-term contract. He couldn't imagine showing up to the team's facility and not seeing his rookie roomie.

Canty, a restricted free agent who would get a bigger deal than Ratliff's on the open market, has yet to sign a one-year tender offer of $2.017 million. He would like to sign a long-term deal before training camp.

"He is the leader," Ratliff said, referring to Canty's role on the defensive line. "I think he's very, very important to the defensive line. He's been at that right end for a long time."

And Ratliff hopes his buddy will be there for many more years.

However Ratliff says he hopes they cuts their losses with Marcus Spears and gets someone that can walk the walk as good as they talk the talk. :D
