Jerry Jones: Potential for drama didn't impact decision on Greg Ellis
2:46 PM Tue, May 26, 2009
Tim MacMahon Greg Ellis has been grumpy the last few off-seasons, and he wasn't shy about discussing his issues with the Cowboys.
Ellis' feelings about his role or his contract won't be a storyline this summer. That's because Ellis won't be a Cowboy.
Jerry Jones acknowledged that he and Ellis didn't always see eye-to-eye on business matters. However, Jerry insisted that the potential for more drama with Ellis didn't impact his decision to part ways with the 11-year veteran.
"Being the quality player and the meaningfulness to the team, that got a lot of attention," Jerry said. "During the heat of those times, you might have frustration. Totally overshadowed by the quality of the individual here. He's really top quality. He's the team representative for the players' union. He's just tops.
"I just couldn't have done what I've done with my life if that kind of thing lingered on or carried with it something in the future with a decision. That's just not the way it works with me and us."
While Ellis occasionally butted heads with the coaches and front office, he's never been called anything but a great teammate. Case in point: He took Anthony Spencer under his wing, even though he knew the 2007 first-rounder would eventually replace him.
"He's definitely a great role model," said Spencer, who got an encouraging phone call from Ellis this morning after the veteran left the owner's office. "He's a pro. He comes to work every day. He knows what's going on, and when he doesn't, he asks questions. He definitely showed me how to play the game."
