Jerry Jones: Potential for drama didn't impact decision on Greg Ellis

2:46 PM Tue, May 26, 2009
Tim MacMahon Greg Ellis has been grumpy the last few off-seasons, and he wasn't shy about discussing his issues with the Cowboys.

Ellis' feelings about his role or his contract won't be a storyline this summer. That's because Ellis won't be a Cowboy.

Jerry Jones acknowledged that he and Ellis didn't always see eye-to-eye on business matters. However, Jerry insisted that the potential for more drama with Ellis didn't impact his decision to part ways with the 11-year veteran.

"Being the quality player and the meaningfulness to the team, that got a lot of attention," Jerry said. "During the heat of those times, you might have frustration. Totally overshadowed by the quality of the individual here. He's really top quality. He's the team representative for the players' union. He's just tops.

"I just couldn't have done what I've done with my life if that kind of thing lingered on or carried with it something in the future with a decision. That's just not the way it works with me and us."

While Ellis occasionally butted heads with the coaches and front office, he's never been called anything but a great teammate. Case in point: He took Anthony Spencer under his wing, even though he knew the 2007 first-rounder would eventually replace him.

"He's definitely a great role model," said Spencer, who got an encouraging phone call from Ellis this morning after the veteran left the owner's office. "He's a pro. He comes to work every day. He knows what's going on, and when he doesn't, he asks questions. He definitely showed me how to play the game."

Smart move by Jerry.. Let Ellis and his agent do all the work.. They find a trade partner and Jerry negotiates a deal.. At least we might be able to get something for him.. Note to Ellis: Talk to Buffalo and New Orleans. We need a Wide Receiver...

I think the media has killed any chances of a meaningful trade. All any potential suitors have to do is a little bit of internet research to see that the Cowboys, one way or another, will not be featuring Ellis. Why, knowing this, would anyone trade anything for him?

Only old, rich, white men still use the saying, "He's just tops." :laugh2:

Well, if there's a market for said player, it might be better to give up something in a trade for him than engage in a bidding war.

I don't know how big of a market there would be for Ellis, though.

I'm going to say it again.

This is a stupid move to not have Ellis on the team in 09 IMO

Classy stuff by Ellis. He may complain/whine a lot but he is a true pro. Ellis was a solid contributor for the Cowboys in his 11 years of service. He never was "great" but he was solid.

Best of luck and thanks for the service Greg.

Why? Pleaase explain

In short:

Our defense is based around our pass rush. Ellis knows the art of the pass rush better than anyone on our roster. That includes Ware.

We would be removing our 2nd best proven pass rusher, and trusting Anthony Spencer (who hasnt stayed healthy) and a bunch of mid-round rookies.

The pass rush is the base of our defense, and we're removing a solid pass rusher, and someone that ALL our pass rushers can learn from. This includes Ware. He's entering his 5th season. He does not know all there is to know about pass rushing. Neither does Ellis, but he can still be an asset to this team.

I guarantee you we would love to keep Ellis as a pass rush specialist, but Greg is the one who won't accept that.

That's some great role model.

He's a role model, alright.

His poor attitude and inflated ego is toxic.

Jerry Jones and the people close to the team will disagree.

So who would trade for him knowing that he will be cut?

Interesting. That would change my opinion 180.

Do you have any sources, or is this just your opinion?
