If you've watched Channel 8's Dale Hansen even on an irregular basis you know he treats Jerry Jones like a pinata. If you've watched Cowboys No. 1 Jerry Jones even on an irregular basis you know Jerry is far more attracted to his critics than his defenders. So naturally, after nights of being bashed by Dale in celebration of his 20 years as Cowboys owner, Jerry showed up on Hansen's set at 10 o'clock Thursday night to talk about his role with the Cowboys.
Talking points: Jerry is never stepping down as general manager; Jerry loves the Cowboys so much that he was willing to hire a coach "who is not your everyday good cup of tea" and that "cup of tea" wanted Terrell Owens on his team to stir the drink: Bill Parcells and Owens: "Unique awkwardness..."they never spoke."
Jerry on his role as GM: "I'm a bigger risk taker... than most others and you can't pay a general manager enough to take the kind of risks that I take because I am the last resort. I'm where the buck stops. I do have a very risk taking style, hadn't paid off as much as I'd like it to. I'd love for it to have won two or three more Super Bowls...and it really wouldn't be compatible with a pure general manager.
Jones on bad tea: "What I hope that what our fans do see is that there is nothing I wouldn't do to try to win. When you go get Bill Parcells you're trying to win when you are in my shoes because Bill is not your everyday good cup of tea to have."
Is there a day when Jones would step aside as GM: "You know I've worked for myself all my life and what you have to do is make adjustments you have to cut your losses but one thing you have to do is make sure just because you have to clean it up with your left hand doesn't mean your right hand isn't going forward in a very positive way..."
Bother you tho fire players and coaches who don't do their jobs well enough but not GMs: "The good news is I haven't had to run off five or six general managers at the same time when we were changing coaches or we were changing players. That's what happens around the rest of the league that have different systems."
Jones on Parcells and T.O.: You've gotta realize than Bill bought into Terrell joining our team and don't think Terrell didn't come to this team without Bill's blessing. He wanted to win and use the talents of Terrell as much as anyone in this organization...the entire time Bill was coach they never spoke..."
