Jerry rules out Ring of Honor class this year

Unless Jerry Jones changes his mind, Texas Stadium has seen its final Ring of Honor ceremony.

"We've got our thoughts on timing, as we go through the year, as we play each of the games," said Jerry, the one-man selection committee. "We want to give a lot of sensitivity and we didn't think it would be the right timing for the Ring of Honor, for a player going in the Ring of Honor, for what we're doing in leaving Texas Stadium. So we won't be doing anything in the Ring of Honor this year."

I can't think of a better way to honor the history of Texas Stadium than to give a couple great players who came before Jerry's reign their long overdue day in the sun.

Drew Pearson, who made the biggest catch in America's Team history, deserves that. You could make a strong agument that Pearson belongs in the Hall of Fame. He has a Super Bowl ring and stats that compare favorably with Canton-enshrined Lynn Swann's numbers. He should join Bob Hayes and Michael Irvin as Ring of Honor receivers.

Deceased DE Harvey Martin, the South Oak Cliff product who was co-MVP of Super Bowl XII, would be next on my list. His franchise sacks records -- a would-be NFL-record 23 in a season (in 1977, before sacks were an official stat) and 113 in a career -- might never be broken.

But Jerry plans for The Triplets, who were inducted in 2005, to be the final Ring of Honor class inducted in Texas Stadium. That's a shame.

I don't care. They where the last great players to play in Texas Stadium anyway. I am sure Jerry will continue with the Ring of Honor at the new stadium and bring all the old names to the new place as well.

No one will ever touch 23 sacks in one year in Dallas IMO. Harvey didn't even do that playing 16 games.......he is SEVERELY underrated as a passrusher by many. He was as good as Charles Haley from a pure rushing the passer standpoint and just as mean..........RIP Harvey Martin...

I understand that Jerry wants to keep the RoH an exclusive group but there are several players who are well deserving of this honor and well overdue for recognition by the team (years and pro bowls are with the Cowboys only:

In no particular order:
Cornell Green - 13 years, 5 pro Bowls
Jay Novacek - 7 years, 5 pro bowls
Ed "Too Tall" Jones - 15 years, 3 pro bowls
Harvey Martin - 11 years, 4 pro bowls
George Andre - 11 years, 5 pro bowls
Charlie Waters - 11 years, 3 pro bowls
Everson Walls - 9 years, 4 pro bowls
Darren Woodson - 12 years, 5 pro bowls
Larry Allen - 12 years, 10 pro bowls
Drew Pearson - 11 years, 3 pro bowls
Nate Newton - 13 years, 6 pro bowls
Mark Tuinei - 15 years, 2 pro bowls
John Niland - 9 years, 7 pro bowls
Pat Donovan - 9 years, 4 pro bowls
Herb Scott - 10 years, 3 pro bowls
Tony Hill - 10 years, 3 pro bowls

That list doesn't include guys who made huge contributions to the success of the Cowboys over the years like:
Jethro Pugh, Larry Cole, Tony Tolbert, Jerry Tubbs, Dave Edwards, D.D. Lewis, Bob Breunig, Bill Bates, Daryl Johnston, Mark Stepnoski, Danny White, Frank Clarke, Billy Joe DuPree, Dave Manders, Tom Rafferty, Blaine Nye, & Dennis Thurman.

There are others who were great players and helped us to win championships or big games but whom I don't really consider Cowboys because most of their careers were with other teams:
Lance Alworth, Herb Adderley, Mike Ditka, Charles Haley, Deion Sanders, Ken Norton, & Kevin Gogan.

I know I am missing a few guys who also deserve consideration. Hopefully, Jerry will induct a lot more players once we are in the new stadium.

It's bad enough we get dissed at the HOF but Jerry dissing our former greats like this really burns my ***. How disrespectful.

All good players, but other than Drew Pearson I wouldn't induct them into the ROH.

Me too.

But I've pretty much given up.

Jerry is doing the exact same thing Tex Schramm did. Tex held Lee Roy Jordan out because of a contact dispute years earlier.

I have to believe Jerry's snub of Drew Pearson has something to do with the trademark/apparrel dispute.

If Roger Staubach can't convince Jerry to put Drew in, then no one can.

It's a real shame and Jerry is dead wrong. ******.

If Jerry had opted to induct some '70s greats in the ROH during the last season at Texas Stadium, it wouldn't been even more emotional than when The Triplets went in. And that's saying a lot. Drew Pearson and the late Harvey Martin would've been perfect inductees. Many more are deserving, but we wouldn't want to cheapen it by putting too many guys in at once. For the older players, being inducted at the new stadium probably won't have the same meaning. Oh well.

We should be inducting a couple of players every year IMO. 2-3 each year would keep it special and still bring in the great players who should be honored.

I respect Larry Allen's accomplishments, but I believe the ROH should be reserved for those players who's names are synonymous with the Cowboys; to the general public, not just the fan base.

How does this exclude Larry Allen then?

Or Too Tall, Harvey Martin, etc.?

The average football fan has never heard of Don Perkins but he was a HUGE part of our early teams and is in the RoH.
