Jerry owes Ellis a meeting
DE-turned-LB Greg Ellis is voicing displeasure with his situation for the second consecutive off-season. He wants to meet with the man who signs his check, and Jerry owes Ellis a man-to-man chat.
Ellis, a team leader for the last decade, has earned the right to have Jerry hear him out. That doesn't mean Jerry should tear up Ellis' current deal, which pays him $2.5 million this season and runs through 2009.
Ellis has zero leverage. He'll be 32 when the season starts and is coming off a serious injury, although he looked great while working on the side during minicamp. And Ellis is all too aware that the Cowboys are about to pay big money to his eventual replacement, first-round pick Anthony Spencer.
I understand Ellis' urgency. He'll probably only sign one more significant contract, and the non-guaranteed deals in the NFL force veterans to be selfish.
But you'd think it'd be in his best interest to wait until after he proves he can still play to negotiate. And Jerry has the right not to give Ellis any choice but to do so.
