I just finished re-watching Atlanta beat Chicago, focusing only on the Falcons offense.

And mainly Tony Gonzalez.

Here's what I came up with:

He went in motion five times. He lined up as a fullback or H-back four times. He was split out 22 times. He was on the line 25 times. In other words, the Falcons do whatever they can to get him in position for a mismatch.

He had four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown against the Bears and was Matt Ryan's target nine times. The young quarterback will look to Gonzalez even when he's covered.

One of the reasons why the Cowboys signed Gerald Sensabaugh was his ability to cover. If he can play this week, he will do so with a cast on his right hand to protect a busted thumb so he's at a disadvantage. And linebackers Bradie James, Keith Brooking and Bobby Carpenter will all be asked to check Gonzalez at some point.

So far this season tight ends have caught 24 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys. (I'm counting KC's Mike Vrabel as a tight end). The Cowboys were able to do a decent job vs. Kellen Winslow and Jerramy Stevens in Tampa Bay. And were OK against Denver's Tony Scheffler and Daniel Graham.

Gonzalez is in a different category from those guys.

Woah! Thanks Todd Archer.

We need to pass this along to the Cowboys coaching staff. Are they aware of this "Tony Gonzalez" character?

I think the fact that he's going to look for Ton G allot will be his weakness I think we can fair well against him but in the redzon I think he's gonna rip us..so it's simply...dont let them in the redzone

I think Archer made a good attempt to describe for the fans how ATL used Gonzalez.

I think a more appropriate evaluation would be to look at past San Diego defenses or at least those that are run by Wade and see how he's defended him in the past.

I love it. My sarcasm meeter is maxed out.:D

If we can contain Tony G. and the outside runs, we will be fine. Easier said then done though.

Gameplan Gonzalez? Psssh, I prefer to let him run loose like a spruce goose, make them beat you with the noodle arm of that impotent and immature Matt Ryan character.

Agreed. We've been missing that since Breer left and when there's finally a hint of it reappearing, the jokes come out.

After reading that for the first time, my initial thought had nothing to do with the Falcons. My mind's eye saw Martellus Bennett doing some of the same, but my memory told me it didn't happen enough yet this season. I hope that will change somewhat in the coming weeks.

its not like we haven't seen his type before. He's good, but our defense can hopefully dictate where he goes much of the time. And besides, our guys go up against another top TE every day in practice. I think we'll handle TG...

Tony G is a monster, but his true colors will shine when Carpenter brings the pain with some white on rice coverage.

Its over.

What's Carpenter going to do; drive over him with his Barbie Dream Car, or beat him upside the head with a Ken doll? :lmao:

What Archer failed to mention is that when you use a TE that extensively in the receiving game and with that much focus, it is indication that they are limited at all other WR positions. That's partly what we see with Dallas, when Dallas over-uses Witten in the same bredth. But since Dallas' defense practices against their own offense that similarly features a TE as the primary WR, then they should be well veresed in defending such an offense. Again, this is another thing Archer failed to mention.

Atl has a passing game and Gonzalez is just a part of it. And if they don't watch out he'll torch them for 8-12 passes for a 100+.

I'm sure Wade knows what Gonzalez is capable of. Now if Sensabaugh can play and play well enough with his injury. I hope Hamlin doesn't have to cover him nor Bradie. At least too often.

The reason i was most excited about the sensabaugh signing was because of the atl game and the others where we play elite TEs. I will be really disappointed if he cant play, we will need him.

More so than Tony Gonzalez per say, I'd be worried about how we have been getting torched in the range between the LBers and Safeties for the last dozen years. Dallas hasn't covered a tight end since the Switzer years.
