it's either gamble on getting it right in the draft, or chancing Hamlin part II

you decide
Hamlin will be fine this year. last year he had 2 slow strong safety's he had to make up for and 2 rookie corners he didn't trust yet.

how did I know a post from Rampage was coming....

Look, when we get Mays, I don't want to see you on here swooning over him, talking about how you just bought a T Mays jersey, and a T Mays Fathead, etc.
we won't be in position to draft him and if we are we won't. he'll be a raider or something.

7 mill?

cut him now, he isn't worth half that.

so hamlin was great playing next to roy williams and he sucked without roy williams.

hmmm...

This is why there is no leadership in the locker room, we tend to cut anyone who is a higher price....

But with Hamlin's cap number it may not matter how well he plays. There is always the option he signs a cap-friendly renogiated deal but I don't think the Cowboys will want to pay him $5,596,000 ($7,096,000 Cap Hit) in 2010.

Odd, that was my first thought as well.

Not sure why people are hounding on Hamlin so much. He didn't have a terrible season. Of the 18 safeties to actually play all 16 games, he was the 2nd least targeted safety. Honestly, a safety that isn't targeted much is a welcome sight to me.

Hamlin is the best safety the team has had since Roy crapped out after 2003, beggars can't be too choosey.

it's cause in 07 he picked off 5 or 6 passes and in 08 he only got 1 trying to cover extra ground because of the crap we had at ss and 2 rookies. he'll be good and making more plays this season.

it's because teams figured out that you didn't have to throw the long ball against us

you could just throw it to the middle of the field

and let's not even talk about his poor tackling technique, which was season long

We arn't getting Taylor Mays. The Raiders will draft him at 4th overall.

My wife's last cigarette? My dog's last crap by the corner of the fence? Give me a break. Let the speculation continue.

Personally, I do believe Ken Hamlin is overrated by many. He did have a good season with us, however at not point did that warrant the enormous contract extension received. That said, I've watched plenty of the ACC and the Big East.

I'm not and never have been 'sold' on Michael Hamlin. He has all the measurables, however, he hasn't ever truly lived up to the hype received at the collegiate level. (He even put up good numbers) Ala Pat Watkins I think. (I hope I'm wrong on that one). I do, for whatever reason do believe that Dealngelo Smith could be something. Seems a natural ballhawk, a playmaker, and may potentially have the intangibles to succeed at this level. That is the type of player we've been looking for quite some time I think.

At least, I hope he does....

I also believe that Taylor Mayes is massively over hyped. I'd love to be proved wrong, but his stats don't stack up to his measurables. Does he wrap up? No. Does he create turnovers? Not really. Is he big, extremely fast, and can jump? Yes. Athletically, he is a freak.

That is the problem with many athletes coming into the NFL these days. I'm not 100% sure Mays falls into this category, but he fits the bill: Guys that have lived off of their superior athletic ability since high school, only to disappoint in the NFL due to their lack of discipline and film study.

You see this most with quarterbacks of the athletic type. Safeties aren't too much different. It is a position of instincts and leadership moreso than that of sheer athletic ability.

The fact that Hamlin has the highest cap number this season is completely irrelevant when it comes to whether he's around in 2010. He doesn't have our highest cap number in 2010, he has the eighth-highest -- or ninth after Ware gets his extension.

Right now, a lot of our contracts are structured with purposefully high cap numbers in 2010 to take advantage of the uncapped season, if it happens. If the CBA is extended before then, they're structured so we can lower the 2010 cap numbers easily. Hamlin's cap number, for example, could shrink to less than $3.5 million in 2010.

He won't be that good anyway. I'm glad they'll take him.

We need to draft a LT before we draft any safeties in the first round.
