ESPN's Mike & Mike announced that this morning marks the start of their 10th year working together. That's further confirmation that we are all old.

In more pressing news, they later declared that Mike Shanahan will be the next coach of the Cowboys. They didn't even qualify it. It's probably just idle talk show yakking but the momentum has begun.

They did make a good point about Jason Garrett. It's one I hadn't mulled but should have.

Mike: "To me the biggest surprise and I don't mean this critically...that after the way their season ended Wade Phillips is the coach of the Cowboys."

Other Mike: "...I also thought that Jason Garrett was the heir apparent yet he was given permission to talk to the Detroit Lions. You know to give your heir apparent permission to talk to another team..."

Interrupted by Mike: "I can tell you who the heir apparent is in Dallas, it's Mike Shanahan. Mike Shanahan will be the coach of the Cowboys a year from now if not sooner."

Jerry may be looking for a way out of this that allows him to save some face (without botox or surgery). If Garrett leaves, then he can bring in Shannahan, and demote Wade. Wade will take the demotion because he is weak willed.

Really????

:laugh2:

FWIW, I'd love Mike Shanahan in Dallas.

Heck, I would love to have Mike Ditka in Dallas right now.

I think Holmgren will be the coach.

It is so freaking obvious that Cupcake is only being kept around for Garrett.

God I hope Denver or somebody hires Coach Tecmo, that is the only way we are going to get rid of Cupcake.

one of the mikes will be here.. I prefer Shanahan over Holmgren. I think it will be sooner Jerry can save face by saying he didn't thinka Shanahan would be open and he thinks that is best for the Cowboys(which it is). As far as Wade staying to run the D good luck with that one.It would be nice I just don't see it happening.

Don't we have to let Garrett talk to teams about Head Coaching vacancies? I didn't think we got a choice.

I don't think Dallas can deny Garrett an interview for a head coaching position.

Jerry could tell Wade to wear a dunce cap on the sidelines for each game, and Wade would do it. He is known as "coach cupcake" for a reason. He is a pushover. That is why jones hired him.

I didn't think so either. From my understanding, if its a move that would be a promotion, then teams cannot prevent the talks.

Garrett departing will give Jerry Jones the "out" he needs.

Assume somehow that Garrett in the unlikely event does get hired by Denver or Cleveland (he's already withdrawn his name from Detroit, unfortunately). Who would Jones select as the replacement as coordinator? Promote from within? I would most certainly hope not and would be revolted if he did.

Wouldn't that destroy the continuity theme? I believe it would, in particular on offense, which is where our pain truly is right now.

That is correct from my understanding as well. "Letting" Garrett interview isn't tipping Jones' hand. Garrett turning down teams though, that might be an indicator that he is still not moving for whatever reason unless he is happy with where he goes.

FoxSports Czar on Shanny to Dallas

Finally, everyone keeps hearing that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gets madder by the day about how his team missed the playoffs. Yes, Mike Shanahan is taking a two-week vacation right now, which means that he will be back before the Super Bowl. Jones still has plenty of time to make a coaching change.

PFW Rumors

Dan Arkush

As for Shanahan, who is still owed $20 million by Bowlen over the next three years, his apparent plan is to carefully weigh his options the next couple of weeks, which we hear could very well include joining up with good buddy Jerry Jones in Dallas — if not this year, then in 2010, after he spends some time decompressing.

“Shanahan would be a great fit in Dallas,” said one pro personnel director. “They could move Wade Phillips to defensive coordinator. That’s what Wade is. He had to take back the reins from (D-coordinator Brian Stewart), who he was training there. He gave him a free lunch, and the kid screwed up.”

I've been saying this for awhile.

Hopefully Wade would take a demotion but I doubt he would.

Yup..

That's what Mike and Mike fail to see. As a courtesy, teams ask for permission to interview their employees, but the employer cannot prevent the interview unless is a lateral move.

For those of you who have the love affair with Shanahan, keep this in mind.

The only team to have more turnovers than the Cowboys was the Bronco's and 49ers.

People fall in love with Shanahan because he is a household name.

How many of you really know what you're asking for?

I do not want Shanahan anywhere near the Cowboys. Give me a young coach that coaches with fire. That is what this team needs, not Shanahan.
