Cincinnati CB Mike Mickens' knee injury is the reason the Cowboys were able to draft him in the seventh round.
But the injury isn't a major concern to the brass at Valley Ranch.
Mickens tore the meniscus and sustained cartilage damage in his left knee while covering a deep route against Louisville. He underwent arthroscopic surgery, missing the final three games before returning to play in the Orange Bowl. Mickens wasn't 100 percent in that game and swelling forced him to pull out of the Senior Bowl and skip the scouting combine.
Mickens was able to work out at Cincinnati's pro day, when he posted a 4.53 40 times and 35.5-inch vertical leap. He had a "yellow tag" on the Cowboys' draft board, meaning they were aware of his injury but didn't dock him due to it.
"We felt like after visiting with our trainers the risk that we were taking there was certainly worth what he could bring to the table," Stephen Jones said. "Theoretically, he could have been right there at the very top of the draft had he not had the injury. We're hopeful that we can get him ready to play. It's not a matter of if he's going to be ready for camp or not. It's more of an issue of how well he's responded to his injury, and can he get back to where he was?"
The Cowboys are optimistic that Mickens will be able to participate in this weekend's rookie minicamp.
"He doesn't have rehab time before he can go to the field," Jerry Jones said. "He can go to the field right now."
