Nick Folk heard about the five kickers coming in for a workout Monday and when he was told Jerry Jones wanted to speak with him later in the day he knew what was about to happen.

The Cowboys officially cut Folk, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2007 but just 18 of 28 kicks this year, later in the day before signing Shaun Suisham.

"The team had to do what it had to do to make the playoff push," Folk said. "I understand the situation. I can't be bitter. They gave me my first shot. I ran with it as far as my leg could take me, literally. It's the way this year has gone first because of the surgery and not being able to prepare the way I needed to prepare to start the season. And then things went the way they had. But I'm not bitter at all. I appreciate the Jones' family giving me everything and Wade and Joe D. for sticking with me. I know it's been a tough run."

Folk said he would be open to returning if he doesn't join another team. He said he will continue to work out and kick in case another job opens elsewhere in the near future.

I don't think the Cowboys wanted to let go of Folk. They like his leg, potential and makeup but time just ran out on waiting for him to turn it around. Placing him on injured reserve wasn't really an option because he had not been on the injury report all season and he had said countless times his surgically repaired hip was OK. The NFL could have made an inquiry into Folk's status had they made that move because they don't want teams stashing players and skirting rules.

I feel for him. He is going to end up getting right physically next year and go back to being one of the best in the league.

He handled it well, and I respect that. Even as I hate him.

That last paragraph is pure truth. They wanted him to straighten himself out but time is of the essence.

Wouldn't one way to skirt the IR problem is to waive him injured. Then if nobody picks him up he goes on the IR. Not sure if that would have worked but just a thought.

Obviously we'll bring him in next camp and see what he does.

I hope so, and if doesn't end up wiht a team before end of season. I am pretty sure, Cowboys will resign him, even if it is TC fodder at the very least. He is worth another shot in oFfseason if he doesn't sign elsewhere.

I am going to say it right now. If we draft a kicker in 2010 I am going to need a restraining order.

Stand up guy. I wish him the best and hope he gets it back together. If he somehow finds his way back to a Boys uniform in the future I will look forward to it. At present, I am thankful the move was made and look forward to some stability at the PK position (hopefully)...

Wait, so he was injured to start the year?

Can I get mad at Jerry again or should I brush up on how PUP works?

Any chance we can stash him on the practice squad and keep him for next year. This way he can have a whole offseason to work on his problems.

Loved his consistency when he had his big year, but I was always a little disappointed in the limits of his leg...I thought he was supposed to be a more powerful guy coming out of college.

If Suisham can get back to his early season consistency, I don't think we'll let him get away again...he has a much stronger leg than Folk.

Just say it was due to "stress" - it happens all the time in less stressful occupations so I fail to see why it can't be used in football.

He'll be invited to training camp, no one is going to pick him up in 2009.
