Nick Folk heard about the five kickers coming in for a workout Monday and when he was told Jerry Jones wanted to speak with him later in the day he knew what was about to happen.
The Cowboys officially cut Folk, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2007 but just 18 of 28 kicks this year, later in the day before signing Shaun Suisham.
"The team had to do what it had to do to make the playoff push," Folk said. "I understand the situation. I can't be bitter. They gave me my first shot. I ran with it as far as my leg could take me, literally. It's the way this year has gone first because of the surgery and not being able to prepare the way I needed to prepare to start the season. And then things went the way they had. But I'm not bitter at all. I appreciate the Jones' family giving me everything and Wade and Joe D. for sticking with me. I know it's been a tough run."
Folk said he would be open to returning if he doesn't join another team. He said he will continue to work out and kick in case another job opens elsewhere in the near future.
I don't think the Cowboys wanted to let go of Folk. They like his leg, potential and makeup but time just ran out on waiting for him to turn it around. Placing him on injured reserve wasn't really an option because he had not been on the injury report all season and he had said countless times his surgically repaired hip was OK. The NFL could have made an inquiry into Folk's status had they made that move because they don't want teams stashing players and skirting rules.
