Notes from the weekend

After about two days of practices we give you some notes.
The Cowboys defense is active and loud. Defensive linemen Jay Ratliff, Tank Johnson, Chris Canty and Jason Hatcher are all over the place making plays. Johnson clogged up a hole on Saturday afternoon stopping a Alonzo Coleman run.
Also, Ratliff is very busy getting good penetration against double-coverage.
It looks like Anthony Spencer is getting it. The outside linebacker is going to get more playing time this season and his jump off the snap of the ball is a reason why. Spencer looks faster than last season and he's understanding how to do things better than his rookie season.
Rookie running back Felix Jones has discovered what life in the NFL is all about. Jones was knocked down on a pass play when linebacker Darrell Robertson threw his shoulder into him.
Jones came back and told running back coach Skip Peete his feet weren't set and he wasn't prepared for such a hit. Welcome to the league, Felix.
I think the No. 3 running back spot is Tashard Choice's to lose. Choice, the rookie from Georgia Tech, has looked good in making cuts and showing a burst through the holes. Alonzo Coleman, Choice's main competition, isn't struggling, but he's not hitting the holes fast enough. There was one carry, where there wasn't any space and Coleman just put his head down into the pile. Choice would have bounced outside and found some room, something that he's done the first two days.
Also, Tony Romo and Jason Witten look great. Nick Folk made seven-of-eight field goals yesterday, his longest from 37 yards. Adam Jones, after catching a punt, put on a nice little spin move to get free from Sam Hurd on the punt drills. Oh, did we mention, Terrell Owens is showing some nice speed on some deep balls.
The one-on-one battles

The best part of practice to some is the 11-on-11 drills. But for me it's watching Terrell Owens vs. Adam Jones. Terence Newman vs. Patrick Crayton. The one-on-one battles in the secondary.
"I look forward to the competition every day," Owens said. "I know whatever I do is going to help them and whatever they do against me it's obviously going to help me. Obviously during the course of practice, it gets very, very competitive and during game time it makes everything easier."
Is there smack talking between you and Jones?
"Every now and then, Adam and I will kinda go back and forth with each other, but it's very, very competitive. That's all you want to have out here is a lot of competition."
Yesterday, Jones jumped a route and should have picked off a Tony Romo pass, but receiver Mike Jefferson grabbed him to prevent Jones from the interception.
Owens hit the turf on a few long pass plays with Jones covering him.
