It took 11 practices, but we finally have a fight worth writing about.
Gee whiz, who would have guessed that Marc Colombo and Jay Ratliff were the combatants? Those guys are arguably the two toughest dudes on the team and probably rank atop the practice fights list in recent years.
The play that led to the scrap was pretty interesting, too. DeMarcus Ware came flying in Tony Romo's face and almost certainly would have had a sack in a game. Romo sidestepped Ware and tried to fire a bullet to Marion Barber over the middle, but Bobby Carpenter batted the ball in the air and came down with the rebound for an interception.
Then the action really got interesting.
Ratliff obviously did something to perturb Colombo, because the 6-8, 318-pound tackle stormed out toward the numbers to attack. Ratliff didn't back down, and those guys mixed it up for a few moments before Terence Newman bravely pulled Ratliff away from the battle.
"That's the way those guys are," Carpenter said of Colombo and Ratliff, who both have reps for being intense and nasty on the field. "That's why you want them on your team. They're both tough, hard-nosed guys, and that's why you've gotta love 'em."

Carp nailed it.

You need these types of guys on your team. Frankly I'd like another or two. Ratliff needs to step up and be the emotional leader of this defense, because his attitude and mentality can really fire up a unit.

Nastiest Cowboy ever Erik Williams. Saw him toss both Reggie White and Ted Washington around, think Washington broke his leg. Columbo brings that, which is badly needed.

Top fight card?
If two guys were going to start throwing down at practice, smart money would have picked Tuesday's two culprits: Marc Colombo and Jay Ratliff.

However, coach Wade Phillips said he had another player pegged to be the first instigator of training camp.

"I thought [Keith] Brooking really because I’ve been around Keith and he normally is the guy in the first fight," Phillips said. "That’s why I was glad he wasn’t."

As for best training-camp fights, Phillips didn't have to think too hard about it.

"When I was with Buddy Ryan because he encouraged them, although nobody was fighting Reggie White or anybody. I think it was more when you're working with another team. We went to Detroit with Buddy Ryan with the Eagles and we went up to Detroit and worked out with them. It was pretty much a fight. It wasn't much workout. Special teams, they had them blocking punts. We were supposed to be working together and they were blocking punts. It seemed like every drill was a fight. We didn't get much out of it."

Fight overshadowed great play by Carpenter
Just witnessed the first real fight of training camp between two heavy weights. Nose tackle Jay Ratliff blindsided tackle Marc Colombo following an interception by Bobby Carpenter. Colombo didnt like it and the two went at it before being separated. They are two of the nastiest players on the team so this would have been a doozy.

The ironic thing is the fight overshadowed a great play by Carpenter, who tipped the pass by Tony Romo up in the air and then snared it for an interception. It was his second pick of practice. He also took a pass away from Martellus Bennett in seven on seven drills.

Tempers Flare In Afternoon Practice
Posted by nickeatman at 8/4/2009 5:22 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

It’s about that time of year. Every training camp, after a week or so, you start hearing the same thing about players getting so tired of hitting each other and it’s time to go play another team. Well, that will have to wait another 10 days or so before the team travels to Oakland. But two of the team’s most intense players got after it here Tuesday afternoon, sparking the first real fight of camp.

Pro Bowl Bowler Jay Ratliff and offensive tackle Marc Colombo scrapped it out after an interception by Bobby Carpenter during the team drills. Now, it’s not often you even get both first-team units facing each other, but in an already-intense practice, things got heated when Ratliff blindsided Colombo, who was running towards Carpenter, who got off the ground after making a diving pick.

Ratliff decked Colombo to the turf, prompting the feisty offensive tackle to get up swinging. It looks like he landed a big swat to Ratliff’s helmet, which didn’t help the situation. Both sides of the ball swarmed to break it up, but the battle actually last two plays.

Ratliff got in Colombo’s face after the next play and even took a small swing in his direction, but Colombo refrained from retaliating.

From the outside looking in, you wonder why Ratliff would try to knock out Colombo. Then again, who knows what’s happening in the trenches on every other play.

Sounds like football.

Carpenter is dominating training camp! I wish they could somehow trick him into thinking the season started later than it did so he'd think the regular season was still camp.

I can't really recall Carp getting all this love in previous camps.

He's been considered pretty much a "chump" from his first minicamp.
