Play of the Day: Mike Hamlin's diving pick

5:26 PM Wed, Jul 29, 2009
Tim MacMahon/Blogger

We didn't have much to choose from today, since the only competition during the opening practice was a 7-on-7 session. But fifth-round SS Mike Hamlin's pick would have been a pretty good candidate even on an action-packed day.

Blanket coverage by Courtney Brown, who is working as the fourth cornerback, on a Miles Austin post route made the pick possible. Brown showed off his 41-inch vertical by soaring to deflect Tony Romo's pass away from Austin.

Hamlin, who was trailing the play, showed off the ball skills that helped him pick off 14 passes at Clemson by diving to scoop up the ball just before it hit the turf.

Brown, who struggled with the physical aspect of playing safety the last two seasons, impressed the coaches all spring with his work at cornerback, his college position. This play displayed the kind of athleticism that makes his potential at cornerback so intriguing.

Sweet. Courtney Brown showing up.

And someone with hands who can get after those tipped passes.

Love it!

Last year after that same type of play, Anthony Henry and Roy Williams would have been pointing at each other and asking who's man was that.

From what I've read, looks like Brown had a really good opening day.

He was one of those "workout warriors" so maybe he turned the corner and became a football player. I'll take it over Ball as the 4th corner, that's for sure.

The ceiling is a little higher on him.

I'm curious to see him in a game. I have a feeling he'll have to do something pretty big to make the team. It sounds like the coaches are a little higher on Ball's instincts.

He was working as the 4th corner, with Ball playing FS today. I think he might have already jumped Ball. Then again, this is the first day of camp, so who knows.

Right in front of me.....both of them made an exciting play:star:

Hmm I've seen two other bloggers Grizz and Smoaky say it was Hawkins not Brown that tipped the pass. I wonder who has it right.

True.....It's interesting that they switched them. I always wondered why they didn't let Brown compete as a CB.

I wonder how many DBs we'll keep?

At CB Newman, Jenkins, and Scandrick are locks. That leaves Mickens and Brown. I'm sure one will make the team.

At Safety you have Hamlin and Sensabaugh as locks. Smith, Ball, Watkins, and the other Hamlin are fighting for two...maybe three spots?

I really used to hate seeing that -- some guy running uncovered across the middle while Anthony Henry is pointing at him. Used to drive me crazy. If he's open and YOU aren't covering anyone YOU COVER HIM!!

I like our stable of young, athletic DBs though. :D

It was reported a few weeks ago that Brown would be at CB and Ball would be at Safety come training camp.

They're not competing against each other at this point. Try to keep up would ya... ;)

I also think Wade was a little too analytical in his earlier scouting report of him

just like he didn't like what he saw of Bradie James on game-tape before he got here

not every CB has great hips

Am I the only one who thinks Ball will develop into a solid 4th corner?

why?

CBs:

Newman
Jenkins
Scandrick
Brown

Safeties:

Hamlin
Sensy
Hamlin
Ball
DeAngelo Smith

9 DBs sounds about right

the great thing is is that Brown, Ball and Smith could all play both CB and S

Brown was one of my "pet cats" in the draft a few years ago, I'd be thrilled if he actually panned out. It's will also be exciting if we can get a guy in the secondary, like Mike Hamlin, who can actually intercept the ball.

Oh, the first day...I love it.

I think Ball is here to stay and the battle is between Mickens and Brown.
